In Light of our Latest Post, One of our Favorite Bushcraft Knives is the Spyderco.

Spyderco’s version of a Bushcraft knife results from a three-fold collaboration between Tactical Bushcrafter Chris Claycombe, a Bushcraft website in the UK and Spyderco designers.

Knives used in the practice of Bushcraft have specific parameters such as possessing blades between 4-6 inches. Spyderco’s is typical of the genre with a 4-inch blade (no handguard) that’s fully-tanged. The blade is a Scandinavian or Scandi grind. Scandi edges have a single bevel grind, wide and flat that cuts with strength and is able to withstand twisting and hacking. The blade is made from O-1 tool steel. Bushcrafters generally don’t seek the characteristics of stainless over the performance of high-carbon edge retention, and is why traditional Bushcraft knives are produced using tool steel for their blades. O-1’s high carbon content holds a long-term edge but also sharpens easily when laying on a new edge.

BUSHCRAFTING

Before you can master anything, you must know what it is.

Bushcraft is about surviving and thriving in the natural environment, and the acquisition of ancient skills and knowledge to do so. Bushcraft skills include; firecraft, tracking, hunting, fishing, shelter building, the use of tools such as knives and axes, foraging, hand-carving wood, container construction from natural materials, rope and twine-making, and many others. These are the kinds of skills well known to our ancestors, many of which are still practiced today as an everyday skill amongst aboriginal and native peoples around the world.

FIXED BLADES:

The tang should extend the full-length of the handle. This gives additional strength to the handle. A partial-tang handle is more prone to cracking and breaking. A full-length tang also allows the knife to be balanced properly so the center of gravity is over the working fingers.

Our favorite fixed? Benchmade 162 BUSHCRAFTER SIBERT DESIGN

WORDS OF WISDOM: Makeshift sharpening methods can damage good knives and won't create sharp, durable edges. Rough stone or ceramic surfaces can produce a ragged, uneven edge. Like a sharpening stone, these methods do not incorporate precision angle guides. In addition, their surfaces are ragged and uneven. It is very difficult to create a uniformly sharp, symmetrical edge this way. Worse, both of these methods can rip off metal, shortening the life of the knife.

The edge of a quality knife does not wear away; it folds over on itself. A knife-edge is microscopically thin - - much thinner than a human hair. The impact of cutting causes the edge to fold over on itself. Pieces of the edge may even break off.

Solution? Better metals.

The Benchmade NIMRAVUS' blade was made of M2 Steel. Resulting in a 62 Approximate Rockwell Harness.

Craftsmanship Counts:

Benchmade has continually delivered knives of perfection and there Bali-Song is no different.

Some Background on Bali-Songs or "Butterfly" Knives: The Balisong, also known as a butterfly knife, fan knife is a folding pocket knife with two handles counter-rotating around the tang such that, when closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handles. It is sometimes called a Batangas knife, after the Tagalog province of Batangas in the Philippines, where it is traditionally made. In the hands of a trained user, the knife blade can be brought to bear quickly using one hand. Manipulations, called "flipping" or "fanning", are performed for art or amusement.

DAMASTEEL

This "Modern Damascus" is made from several types of steel and iron slices welded together to form a billet. The patterns vary depending on how the smith works the billet. The billet is drawn out and folded until the desired number of layers are formed. In order to attain a Master Smith rating with the American Bladesmith Society that Moran founded, the smith must forge a damascus blade with a minimum of 300 layers.

OTF KNIVES: I love them, you love them. First, let's dispel a common myth;

Despite popular belief and movie magic, OTF automatic knives are not powerful enough to open when pressed against an opponent and then pushing the button. Double-action sliding autos are only spring-powered 10 to 12 millimeters; afterwards, kinetic impetus slides the blade to full open. Single-action OTF autos have a spring drive the full length of blade travel, but the size of the contained main spring is never large enough to drive a blade through much resistance.
