Let’s walk in together a bit, shall we? I’ve been a Certified Lactation Counselor since 2018. I’ve done the prenatal breastfeeding workshop about 100 times, plus I’ve worked with over 700 individual clients. I’ve also attended about 100 births as a doula, including assisting with first latch and newborn nursing. I love the opportunity to talk about lactation science with the mom’s closest support person. I’m always thrilled to see dads, grandmas, sisters, and doulas in the seats, absorbing the information and asking great questions.
Being a CLC and a doula has given me the chance to spend my entire lactation practice seeing common struggles and scenarios in homes, during counseling sessions that typically last at least an hour and a half. Home visits are often raw and authentic, and plans can be made that consider the mom’s practical capacity, resources, and support systems. I am happy always to refer to pediatricians, OBGYNs, and IBCLCs when needed, and I make a point to be sure moms have a deep bench of appropriate care providers. To that team, I believe I bring a unique fluency in the practical application of what we teach in terms of postpartum life and breastfeeding challenges due to the time I can spend with families in their homes.
Well above and beyond the requirements for a CLC, I work hard to stay current in evidence-based lactation science, having logged well over 300 hours of lactation education to support my work. I believe women deserve to really deeply understand their own bodies, both from their own personal internal experience and intuition, as well as from outside resources, what we can offer from science and research to make sense of those experiences. It is a privilege for me to help them learn. In the current world of passive, social media-based information delivery, I believe the biggest gift we can give new moms is relationship-based mentoring and in-person care. I’m committed to letting moms process their experiences and talk through their own goals and ideas, which I believe leads to greater peace, fulfillment, and confidence in their early motherhood choices. Whether you’re a fellow helper or a new parent, hi! Let’s go together. 💖
