How Bikeable Started

Our son, Reid was born early at 28 weeks, and was diagnosed with Cerebral palsy. With weakened legs, poor balance and coordination he couldn’t ride a bike, even with training wheels. We tried a few solutions, one of which was a tricycle that he could actually pedal and ride, but by age 8 he didn’t want to ride a bike that was so different from his friends. Like most kids his age, he wanted a BMX.

So we set out to build him one. Call it the prototype. Reid needed a wide seat with a seat back, a gear ratio that the could start from a stop and foot straps on the pedals. But that’s just Reid, other kids need hand grips or a balance pole, adaptaions for a missing limb or stability wheels (not training wheels) and a number of other adaptations. Now we’re setting out to build Bikeable Bikes with options for children of all abilities.
