The feedback’s been great and we’re so happy you’ve enjoyed getting to read more about your fellow members in our “Member Highlights”. Nothing we love more than celebrating the awesome humans we get to work with every day. In a continued effort to celebrate the people around us we’ve decided to add a “Coaches Corner” where you’ll get to learn more about our coaches!

Up first we’ve got our one and only Coach Brian. You can catch him coaching at our Flatiron Location Monday-Thursday, 4pm-closing.

Typical class time?

How long have you been doing CrossFit?
5 years, since 2018. Time flies!

What do you like to do outside the gym?
I love discovering new restaurants/things to do, spending time with my loved ones, traveling and shopping

What are some of your fitness goals?
No specific fitness goals but just general goals: always trying to beat my PBs lifts/max reps, constantly working on my forms(shout out to Oly lift), and of course, beating the boys lol.

Favorite CrossFit movement?
This is a tough question. Deadlifts! But I also truly love back squats and wall balls.

Least favorite CrossFit movement?
Burpees, ew.

Words of advice for someone thinking of starting?
If you're considering starting, my advice is to let go of overthinking and simply embrace the experience with joy. Listen to your body, your coach, be patient with yourself through the challenges, set realistic goals, stay committed & most importantly, have fun (learn to)!!
Ps. Don’t forget to allow your mind and body to rest and recover. It’s just as important. :)

Reading anything?
Not at the moment, podcasts for the win!

Favorite movie?
I don’t have a favorite movie but I do have a favorite show: “Girlfriends”

Favorite food?
Big pasta and pizza girlie

Favorite Dessert?
Chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream owns my heart

Post workout food?
I’m a very light eater after workouts! Usually grab any light snack(s). A banana, apple, sandwich, pretzels, any Trader Joe’s snack and/or smoothie. & of course, some candy when available (duh!) — I love gummies 🫶🏼

What do you love about CrossFit nyc?

I love the great coaching I receive from the amazing coaches that we have! It makes a big difference in my training. The community at CrossFit NYC has been incredibly valuable to me, especially in terms of the long-lasting friendships I have built.

We are so excited to bring back member highlights! And so happy to be starting with this one.

We got a chance to sit down and chat with Shelly Altman and here are some of the cool things we learned about our rockstar athlete.

Shelly is an UWS regular and can be found taking the 1:30pm class most days. She has been doing Crossfit for approximately 5 years and has found a love for the sport, its challenges and it’s inclusivity.

Q: What are some of your fitness goals?

A: Well, I am turning 70 in December and I would love to get a strict pull up by then.

Q: What is your favorite Crossfit movement?

A: Deadlifts!

Q: What is your least favorite Crossfit movement?

A: I used to hate certain CrossFit movements. (Wall balls 👀) But lately I find that I don’t. The process of moving through exercises and doing what you can and scaling where you need is all part of the process and I enjoy that.

Q: What do you like most about Crossfit?

A: The inclusivity of age, race, gender. Women are truly equal. We all walk in and are all athletes.

Q: What are some words of advice for someone thinking of starting Crossfit?

A: Don’t compare yourself to the people around you or think about what you can’t do. The beauty of Crossfit is that there is always something you CAN do and you slowly chip away at the rest.

Q: What do you do outside the gym?

A: I was the head writer of General Hospital among other things and am now retired. Aside from Crossfit, I have created a space in my apartment where I can work on art, I spend time with my grand daughter and travel.

*Swipe to see some of the art projects Shelly has shared with us!!*

Q: What are some non-fitness related goals?

A: I am open to the possibilities. No one specific goal, enjoying every day.

Q: Favorite Movie?

A: I am a big movie fan. Aside from my own movie, if the Wizard of Oz is on I will always watch it straight through. E.T., The Producers.

A few extra fun facts:

-Shelly has lived in NYC her whole life, in 4 out of the 5 boroughs.
-Loves all types of asian food
-Has travelled and visited all but 4 of the major league stadiums and hopes to visit the final four soon.
-Has won 3 Emmy Awards

CrossFit NYC is now the fourth oldest CrossFit affiliate in the world. More people (and more CrossFit coaches) have started their CrossFit journey at CrossFit NYC than anywhere else in the world.

Hari is in debt to Dave for running his Level 1 Cert (2007), defining what is possible in CrossFit, by running the Games from (figure out the years), and with using his Navy Seal instincts to advise him to quietly leave a Russian Vodka bar before things got ugly (ask him at a future Happy Hour).
