2026, Ballet Teacher Intensives
Learn the ‘Method of Teaching Classical Dance' in courses
for Ballet Teachers, Ballet Masters, and Choreographers.

Kostrovitskaya / Vaganova Syllabus
The Six Year Accelerated Program is used to train students.
With the Program developed by Vera Kostrovitskaya, Vaganova’s Assistant.

Ballet teachers take Six Courses, in sequence, one at a time.
To complete the Program, teachers begin with elementary work (Year 1) and progress through courses to advanced level work (Year 6).

Each course (5 to 7 days long and 35 to 50 hours in length) covers one academic year - (September to June). Each step in the syllabus is broken down and introduced, in sequence. The material is illustrated and teachers learn how it is applied in conjunction with the entire year’s material.

Upon completion of each course, a Certificate may be earned with or without exam. Participant’s choice.

It takes 35 - 50 hours to complete each course – in-person or ‘on own time’.

Dance and Education
Through progressive, syllabus driven, methodical training, dancers of any age or level may develop the strength, mind-muscle patterns, coordination, and understanding necessary to execute movements properly, with artistry, and with minimal risk of injury. For those desiring to dance professionally, classical dance training gives dancers a wonderful base to audition for a classical or a contemporary ballet company.

Students will progress in schools that have a unified pedagogical (teaching) system that has evolved out of the general advance of teaching method (Janet Springer).

Classical Dance as an 'Art Form'
"In a burst of joy children dance and jump, but their dances and jumps are only instinctive manifestations of joy. In order to elevate these manifestations to the heights of an art, we must give them a definite form..." (Agrippina Vaganova).

Accompanists, such as Vladimir Shinov, are valuable team players in the ballet classroom. Ballet teachers need to know musical meter and musical value, for each step or combination of steps, in the classical dance vocabulary. Then, teachers can ask a pianist for the appropriate music. The same musical knowledge is necessary when using DVDs or mp3.

CDA’s manuals for teachers have written descriptions which contain the form (musical value) and musical meter (4/4, 2/4, 3/4 etc.) for each step in the classical dance vocabulary. The vocabulary is placed, by step, in the appropriate time-frame when it should be taught (in an academic calendar year format). Kostrovitskaya’s syllabus is a part of CDA’s Six Year Accelerated Program. It was designed by Vera Kostrovitskaya, who was Agrippina Vaganova’s entrusted assistant.
