: This Carolina mantis stopped by for a visit! This is the only native mantis to NYC. This one is female, which you can tell by its shorter wings. Females also can't fly, so this mantis got a chance to crawl around our plants! 🍃

Our series, presented by Persol, officially wrapped on Friday, September 18 and we couldn’t be happier with how successful the season was! Here at , we believe we have the best playgrounds – from Slide Mountain to the pirate-themed structure at Main Street Playground, and everything in between!

While the Park is open from 6 am to 1 am, our eight playgrounds will begin closing at 7 pm as the fall season means the sun will set earlier. Find more details on the playgrounds on our website – we have something for everyone to enjoy!

You might recognize this as seaweed - but more specifically, it's algae!

Algae are predominantly aquatic photosynthetic organisms, and they are mostly found in water - like in the East River or the Pier 1 Pond at !
On the shore of the East River in BBP (pictured here), you can find three distinct colors of the algae - green algae (Chlorophyta), red algae (Rhodophyta) and brown algae (Phaeophycae). Rockweed, which is a type of brown algae, is the most common! It attaches to rocks, then uses its vesicles to act as flotation devices so it can reach towards the sun to photosynthesize. 🌞

You can join BBP Educators at the upcoming Aqua Cosmos event with on Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26 at Emily Warren Roebling Plaza for a kid-friendly lesson on algae! More details on our website (link in bio).

Fun Fact: algae is an important part of the East River's food web. It's also globally responsible for generating 50 percent of the world's oxygen - making it pretty important for the planet!
