To all middle and high school girls interested in joining the Newark Girls wrestling team; we are having a girls wrestling try it out day on Saturday, May 16th, 2026 from 12-1:30 at the Roosevelt building (621 Mt. Vernon Rd). All ability levels are welcome! Please see Coach Cousins or any of the current girls wrestlers for more information.

All conference honors were just announced for the Ohio Capital Conference Girls' Buckeye Division. Earning All conference honors for the Newark Wildcats girls wrestling team were;
Brooklyn Dowell: 1st team All OCC
Brookyln Kaneff: 3rd Team ALL OCC
These two young ladies continue to make history for our young program as they are the first two to ever earn All Conference honors.

Wrestling has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It started out in the Gahanna youth program. My hometown did not offer youth wrestling at the time. I was 4 years old and could barely walk in a straight line let alone perform a knee over toe pe*******on step. By the end of the year, I won the last youth tournament wrestling kids that were 2-3 years older than me. My Dad bribed me with a Gameboy if I won. I remember leaving the local Circuit City (Holy throwback… wow!) with my new Gameboy and Pokémon red version. I was hooked.
Fast forward 28 years and now I have the pleasure of coaching our trailblazing female athletes who helped bring this sport to Newark. Although I couldn’t offer a Gameboy or Pokémon, they decided to take the leap and try something that was new and challenge themselves. Although their season is over, their journey in this wonderful sport is just beginning.
The video below speaks for itself. Women’s wrestling is by far the fastest growing sport in the entire United States. There are so many opportunities for female athletes to begin wrestling. It does not just start at the high school level. There is women’s wrestling in the middle school and even youth levels.
I hope that you truly take a moment to watch this video and truly consider your daughter coming out and giving this sport a try. I know you will not regret it after you see all of the amazing lessons and skills they will learn along this journey.

Today, our girls left everything on the mat! Heart, grit, and pure determination! While they came up just short of qualifying for districts, what they achieved is far BIGGER than any bracket or score. These athletes made Wildcats history by being brave enough to be the FIRST, and that alone is something to celebrate.
The pride we feel as coaches, family, and friends is immeasurable. Watching these girls grow, battle, and believe in themselves has been nothing short of inspiring. They didn’t just compete they built the foundation for a program that is going to thrive for years to come.
This is only the beginning, and the excitement for what’s ahead is real. Be on the lookout for opportunities to come tour our wrestling facilities and see firsthand what makes this program so special and learn how you can be part of an incredible and growing program. Dates coming soon.

This season marks the first year Newark has had a girl's wrestling team, and these athletes aren't just competing, they are setting the standards.
Not because it was easy.
Not because it was already done.
But because these girls were brave enough to step on the mat and lead the way.
Every practice, every match, every challenge is helping build something bigger than a season. They wrestle for themselves and for every girl who will come next.
We are proud of our athletes, coaches, families, and supporters who made this possible.
