One of the best parts of what I do is watching the players I’ve coached grow—not just on the ice, but off it as well.

Even though I now live in Delaware, I always look forward to making the trip back to Long Island to work with my 2013 group. I’ve had the privilege of coaching many of these players since they were mites, and seeing the young men they’re becoming is something I’m incredibly proud of.

This past weekend, one of those players, Monte, surprised me with an amazing gift he designed and 3D-printed himself—a Long Island lighthouse that will always remind me of home. It was such a thoughtful gesture, and I’m truly grateful. Thank you, Monte! Your kindness means a lot, and I’m excited to see where your business goes.

If you’re looking for custom team gear, be sure to check out Monte’s Penalty Box Prints! He creates high-quality custom hype/award chains and bag tags for teams, and he sells and ships nationwide.

It’s always special coming back to Long Island to work with this incredible group of players. Moments like this are a reminder that hockey is about so much more than the game—it’s about the relationships, the memories, and watching the next generation succeed both on and off the ice. 💙🏒

🚨 IN CASE YOU MISSED IT 🚨

On this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, Chuck sat down with Dr. Kent A. Corso, Psy.D., BCBA-D, to explore one of the most important and often overlooked areas in youth sports—mental and emotional health.

Dr. Kent A. Corso brings over 20 years of experience in mental health, including his work in the U.S. Air Force and his development of PROSPER, an evidence-based su***de prevention, intervention, and postvention program used internationally. With 50+ peer-reviewed publications, he is a leading voice in understanding and preventing su***de through science, behavior, and systems-level change.

In this conversation, we dug into what it really means to support young athletes beyond performance—how we build them up as people first.

🏒 Key themes from the episode:
• Why mental health conversations need to be part of every locker room and home
• How parents and coaches can balance high expectations with empathy
• Recognizing signs of struggle—even in high-achieving athletes
• The power of connection, trust, and communication in protecting mental health
• Redefining toughness: resilience built on awareness, support, and emotional honesty
• Creating environments where athletes feel safe to speak up without judgment
• Why seeking help is a strength, not a weakness

This episode is a reminder that development goes far beyond the scoreboard—what happens off the ice matters just as much as what happens on it.

If you or someone you know is struggling, in the U.S., you can call or text 988 to connect with support anytime.

What if the words meant to “motivate” your young athlete are actually pushing them away from the game?

In this clip, Dr. Kent Corso shares a powerful message for parents and coaches: yelling, criticizing, and dissecting every mistake after the game doesn’t build better athletes—it can have lasting emotional consequences.

🚨 Post-game criticism can lead kids to:
🏒 Lose their love for the sport and quit.
🏒 Intentionally underperform just to escape the pressure.
🏒 Develop feelings of self-hatred or resentment toward a parent.

If your goal is to help young athletes grow, this conversation is one every hockey parent and coach needs to hear.

🏒 Hockey is built on adversity. Every shift, every battle, every setback is an opportunity to grow.

But does building a mentally tough hockey player mean telling them to “suck it up?”

In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, Dr. Kent Corso challenges one of the biggest myths in hockey culture: toughness isn’t built by shaming emotion—it’s built by helping young athletes work through it.

In this clip, you’ll learn:
🥅 Why hockey already teaches resilience
💪 How parents and coaches can build real mental toughness
🧠 Why acknowledging emotions doesn’t make players soft—it helps them bounce back stronger
🏒 How supporting effort and perseverance creates confident, resilient athletes
💪 The toughest players aren’t the ones who never struggle. They’re the ones who get back up, compete again, and keep growing.

🎧 Watch the clip and join the conversation: What does real hockey toughness look like to you?
