EVERY WRESTLER HAS A STORY: FROM MOTOCROSS TO THE WRESTLING MAT

Patrick's wrestling journey started in 3rd grade almost by accident. His real passion was motocross, where he competed nationally. His dad, who wrestled in the '90s, convinced him to give wrestling a shot because the short youth season fit perfectly around motocross.
Under Coach Demetrius Cooley, Patrick went 29-2 his first season. He wasn't convinced wrestling was for him, but his dad made him come back for year two. By year three, he was hooked.
After injuries from motocross, Patrick started working harder in the gym and eventually found his home at Tough House Wrestling Club, where Dalton Carroll has played a huge role in his development.
Patrick eventually made the decision to move up and wrestle varsity as a 7th grader. At just 82 pounds wrestling 106, he finished 38-8 and missed qualifying for state by one match. He was devastated.
But that loss lit a fire.
Since then, Patrick has won every offseason state tournament he's entered, including freestyle and Greco state titles, competed with Team Alabama at U14 National Duals, wrestled at NFHS Virginia Beach, went undefeated at Deep South Nationals, remained undefeated individually at Coach Carr's Cat 5 Nationals, and represented elite dual teams throughout the Southeast.
But his dad says the biggest thing isn't the wins.
Patrick is hard-working, humble and honest. He's never too busy to help a new wrestler who wants to learn.
At just 13 years old, he's already learned that wrestling is about much more than winning. It's about the lessons, the relationships and the time spent together.
Faith is at the center of their family, and wrestling has brought father and son countless hours traveling, training and talking about life.
Ask Patrick for advice and he'll keep it simple:
"Get the most out of every rep. Listen to coach. And make it fun—even when it sucks."
Eighth grade and a new season are right around the corner. Patrick has finally made some big gains in weight, so check back in February.
The journey is just getting started.

EVERY WRESTLER HAS A STORY… AND TODAY, I WANT YOU TO MEET BILL KRALL.
I started wrestling pretty late 10th grade at North Allegheny High School in Wexford, PA. The year before I started, NA had an incredible team with several state champions, including Ray Brinzer and Teague Moore. By the time I came along, most of those guys had graduated.

I wasn’t a natural wrestler, and I lost plenty of matches. I didn’t make varsity until my senior year, but I became obsessed with the sport. I was fortunate to train with some of the great wrestlers who came back during college breaks, and I learned a ton just by being around those guys.

I ended up wrestling at Washington & Jefferson in college. I was about 205 pounds wrestling heavyweight against guys who were often 250–260. I took plenty of beatings, but I learned. After college, I volunteered at NA and continued developing as a wrestler.

At 26, I started training in jiu-jitsu and quickly realized how much my wrestling background helped. I became just as obsessed with jiu-jitsu and eventually spent another 15–16 years competing, including some super fights and money tournaments.

I later coached at Bethel and became the head coach at Baldwin when my son wrestled there. Looking back, I realize that even though I never became a great competitive wrestler, wrestling gave me experiences, friendships, and a foundation that stayed with me for decades.

I wouldn’t trade any of it.
