Attended the VB Parks & Recreation Open House this evening on the Owl Creek Boat Ramp Project. Had an opportunity to meet and speak with Parks & Recreation staff, Owl Creek Contractor, and fellow anglers.

The first thing that needs to be said is today's condition of the Owl Creek ramp is where we are. There's no going back and saying we could've or should've this or that, it's a lesson learned that everyone agrees on - We can do better in the future working together.

The need to accomplish some degree of restoration within the existing funding available is realized and there's a path forward. That effort is focused on providing an extension to Ramp #1. In its current state Ramp #1 (the right side ramp) is 72 ft in length. With the placement of rock substrate and a precast concrete extension it will bring the ramp to 89 ft 9 inches in total length. The current slope of the poured concrete ramp is 10 degrees and the ramp extention will increase that section to 15 degrees. Riprap stone will be placed another 9 ft past the ramp extention. The center Ramp #2 and the left side Ramp #3 will remain as they are. So, users remain cautious when using these ramps as they don't extend past the pier.

The list of "wants" for the Owl Creek ramp is long; paved lot, better parking arrangement for trailers and cars, lighted ramp and docks, dock extensions, overflow parking, etc. None of that can be accomplished or even studied within the remaining finances. It will take a coordinated effort from the Owl Creek user community to move forward together to convince the Virginia Beach City Council to help us determine what can realistically be done, how to finance it, and what steps are needed to bring it to fruition. Nothing will happen quickly is the only reality.

Another great Norfolk Anglers Club day supporting the families at the Surf Fishing event at Back Bay Wildlife Refuge this morning. Weather was great and it's always good when the fish participate too! This was the fifth and final event for the summer and we had a wonderful time supporting the families. Looking forward to next summer!

Here's an opportunity to hear first hand from the City on their plans to restore the Owl Creek boat ramp.

An open house on planned work at Owl Creek Boat Ramp will be held on Monday, August 24 at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building (2154 Landstown Rd). Drop in any time between 6:00-7:30pm to see updates on the planned ramp extension and timeline for construction. The planned work is in response to feedback from ramp users on improving the experience when launching and loading boats at low tide.

What a great way to wrap up our summer Children's Headboat Trips with a morning fishing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge aboard the Nancy Anne! Of the five trips we've sponsored this summer this had the most "catching" going on. There was an 18" Flounder and a 4' Sandbar Shark caught along with more croakers than you can count!

These trips are sponsored by the Norfolk Anglers Club with volunteers from our club and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission with funding from the Recreational Fishing Development Fund (VMRC) and through donations to the Norfolk Anglers Club in memory of our recent loss Ned Smith.

We can't thank our volunteers who work on the boat with the kids and organizing their lunch at the Community Center when they return. The folks at Marco's Pizza and the crew of the Nancy Anne made for great memories for the summer for every one of our trips. We're looking forward to ramping up next summer to do it all over again!
