Hey all -
Starting this week, Thursday night classes will move to Wednesday nights. Wednesdays from 7:30 - 9:30pm. Same location. Sundays will continue, as always.

[BLOG POST] Soke Hatsumi has said that the San Shin no Kata is one of the most important forms of practice. But like so many, I neglected it. Find out why that was a huge mistake in our blog post breaking down the Sanshin. https://todaidojo.com/ninjutsu-training/understanding-the-sanshin/
Hey all! Just a reminder that classes are suspended until Sunday Jan. 6th, 2019.
Happy Holidays, everyone!! See you in the New Year.
Any of this look familiar? 😉

Bujinkan Tasmania Budo Dojo 徳武流水武神館武道道場
The dojo is not a place of democracy. It is neither a consumer mentality of "give and take" with the teacher. The dojo and learning environment exists to develop deeper relationships beyond the realm of monetary transactions.
"Isshin Denshin" is the direct and personal transmission of knowledge between the teacher and student. It is individual, and will be unique to each person who courageously enters the dojo commencing Shugyou.
The consumer mentality has no place in the dojo. It is not a community center, or gymnasium. It is neither a sports team, nor a club. The dojo is a place where the spirit and body is challenged in often chaotic ways to develop a greater understanding of the self.
The teacher is not always a friend. He is often "cruel to be kind" to address what is required for growth, following the laws of nature. The training may feel unfair or inhospitable. But, this is life. Budo is life. It is not an art instructed to shelter people from life's harshness, it is rather a place to increase fortitude and resilience in order to survive and overcome obstacles. Those that truly do not want to delve deeper to the soul, will not last in the dojo. Even if they do stay, their growth may only go skin deep. The dojo is not a place that everyone can accept. There will be blood, sweat and tears, boring, and times of trial. The concept of "Buyu" allows these times to be made bearable with laughter and friendships developed from a brotherhood of shared spirits and bodies. The tatami mats look soft, yet they are really a stoney floor/path that requires guts to keep walking and falling on,no matter how painful, challenging,or difficult.
Budo teaches how to persevere and endure hardship better in our lives. This intern opens the mind and heart to experiencing and appreciating true happiness and love. Through hard training we see the fragility of ourselves
and others, eventually developing a balanced sense of compassion in our lives.
"Keep persevering and trying your best every day!"

The luncheon at Hana, commemorating the 42nd anniversary of Takamatsu sensei's passing was pretty good.
A few things in particular stick in my mind.
First of all, I don't like to say 'I told you so'... but I TOLD YOU SO! Several people asked me over the past few months about what to expect from it. I basically told them 'not much'. Soke had been downplaying it all along. It was to be a small affair, pretty much following the same pattern as the Shidoshi-kai parties we have every few months. But some people, it seems, were exaggerating the whole thing... saying that it was an important event that all shihan should attend, and that Sensei was going to make some kind of very important announcement. When did Sensei ever say that??? At one point, I actually told Soke about some of the rumours that were being spread around... that he was retiring... that he was going to name his successor... etc. It gave him quite a chuckle, I'll tell you! Were there any special announcements today? Nope! Oh, did I mention... 'I told you so!'
I especially liked Kan sensei's speech. He talked about being at a Taikai with Soke. He really felt in good form, and felt that whenever Soke was looking at him he looked especially good. He probably tried to look even cooler whenever Sensei was looking, doing all kinds of cool-looking henka, trying to impress.
After training, Sensei approached him, and he was expecting Sensei to say "Looking good there, Kan!"However, Sensei came up to him and coldly said "You should stop that right now! You were just doing you own thing!!" He went on to tell him that he had only ever done what Takamatsu sensei taught him.... There's no need to just do your own thing!
The other thing that sticks in my mind is seeing Sayaka Oguri get up and talk about her dad. I knew her dad when he was single, and I remember congratulating him on his marriage, then on the birth of his little girl. I saw her grow up, and feel like a proud uncle, seeing what a charming and lovely young woman she has become. She talked about how the Bujinkan was a family to her father, and that strengthens the feelings I have for her as family. I don't speak much to her.. she hangs out more with the younger generation... but whenever I see her, I smile to myself.
She spoke about how her father used to train every day, and that 'kihon' was everything to him. She spoke about how he continued to train as much as he could, even after being hospitalised. Very inspiring. Thanks Sayaka-chan!
There were some other nice speeches, but those were the ones that left the strongest impressions.
Oh, and what a great job Doug did as MC! smile emoticon
Hey all! So, Wednesdays are the new Thursdays. From now on, class will be held on Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Same park, same place.

Hey all – we are on for tonight! It will be muddy and cold, but it doesn't look like it's going to rain on us. See you at 7:30!

I like Kesting's grappling tutorials and use them pretty often. This is a fun bonus video he posted.

You're not afraid?
Of course, I'm afraid. There's a band of Wildlings coming to kill us.
If you're afraid of a band of Wildlings, how in the Seven Hells did you manage to kill a White Walker?
I didn't know I was going to kill it. But I had to do something, I didn't have any choice. t was about to kill Gilly and take the baby. If someone had asked me my name, right then, I wouldn't have known. I wasn't Samwell Tarly, anymore. I wasn't a steward of the Night's Watch, or son of Randall Tarly, or any of that. I was nothing at all. And when you're nothing at all, there's no reason to be afraid.
But your afraid now?
Yes, well… I'm not nothing anymore.
Hey gang - I'm out of town this weekend and it looks like Eric is unavailable tomorrow (5/11/14). I'm afraid we'll have to cancel again. We're definitely on for Thursday. See you then.
Sorry to have to cancel again tonight (4/17), folks! Work has me tied up into this evening. Have a great night! See you Sunday!
Hey gang - my apologies, but it looks like I have rehearsal for a film this evening. I'm afraid we'll have to cancel tonight. (Thursday 3/27/14)
Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday! Have a great night!
Don't forget to set your clocks forward tonight, folks!!
Ok, rained out again, today 3/2/14, I'm afraid. Back at it on Thursday! Have a great week!
Hey all - looks like this storm coming in the next few days will be pretty fierce. I'm going to go ahead and cancel class for tomorrow night (2/27). See you Sunday!
Yep. Class is on tonight 2/6/14! Dress warm and bring rain gear. Might get a light sprinkle, but should be alright.
Just a reminder that there's no class again tonight. We'll be back on schedule next week! See you Sunday!
