We’re excited to announce the formation of the 2013 boys’ team! We are currently seeking 6th-grade players born in 2013 or 2014.

Our first practice will be on March 11th at Elmhurst Middle School.

We are excited to be named a 2025 Sports 4 Life grant recipient! The Sports 4 Life program – co-founded with ESPN – utilizes the power of sport to build a solid foundation for girls in underserved communities to thrive on and off the field of play. We are grateful for their support to continue our work!

This spring, our Oakland Genesis Academy students dove deep into their Inquiry Projects focused on one major goal: securing meaningful summer internships and jobs. From exploring paid positions to pursuing resume-boosting experiences, our young leaders are actively building the futures they envision — not just on the pitch, but in their communities and careers.

Through our academic program, students explore a curated list of opportunities and apply based on their unique passions and goals. It’s all part of our commitment: 100% of Oakland Genesis Academy participants will complete a job or internship opportunity before they graduate. At the end of the season they present their summer plans to their teams and parents.

One student, Brallan Lopez, was accepted into the prestigious Engineering Possibilities in College program at Cal Poly on a full scholarship! Huge shout out to Brallan. With dreams of being an engineer and designing affordable housing, Brallan is already laying the foundation for a future that makes a real impact — and this summer opportunity is a major step forward for him.

For the other students, their summer opportunities include data science and coding programs, retail jobs, trade schooling and apprenticeships, college courses, working with youth, and more. This is what purpose-driven growth looks like — on and off the field. 🏗️⚽

This semester, we’ve been lucky to have three Cal student-athletes—Wisdom, Alfredo, and Kevin—volunteering with our 09A team. From tutoring in the classroom to coaching on the field, they’ve been showing up every week and making a real impact. Grateful for their time, energy, and mentorship!

Oakland Genesis is hiring Soccer Coaches to join our team! ⚽️

We’re looking for passionate, mission-driven coaches to lead both competitive teams and afterschool soccer programming. This unique role goes beyond the field — coaches support players with rides, academic success, mentorship, and more.

Whether you’re developing a curriculum for new players in our afterschool program or guiding competitive teams through games and practices, you’ll be using the game of soccer as a tool to uplift Oakland youth.

Coaches should have some experience with soccer and/or coaching. Spanish language skills and a coaching license are a plus, but not required. You must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Estimated hours range from 4-21 per week depending on your program involvement. Pay range is $25–$50/hr depending on experience and qualifications.

OUR MISSION:
Soccer is more than just a sport — it’s a tool for empowerment, education, and opportunity. At Oakland Genesis, we provide cost-free youth development programs to underserved Oakland youth, channeling their passion for soccer into personal growth, academic success, and lifelong opportunity.

On Monday, March 17th, Oakland Genesis student-athlete Derbing Alvarado was tragically shot and killed while walking to practice. This heartbreaking loss is felt deeply by our players, coaches, families, and everyone who is part of our program. No child should ever lose their life to violence, and no family should have to endure this pain.

Derbing was an amazing young man—hardworking, kind, funny, and committed to getting better every day, both on and off the field. He showed up with dedication, passion, and a love for the game that inspired those around him. His presence made our team and our community stronger, and his loss is immeasurable.

At Oakland Genesis, the safety and well-being of our student-athletes will always be our top priority. While this tragedy has shaken us all, we remain committed to providing a safe, supportive, and positive space for young people to grow. We believe in the potential of every kid in our program, and we believe that the student-athletes in Oakland Genesis can help be the change that the city of Oakland so desperately needs.

We ask our community to come together in this difficult time—to support our young people, to uplift one another, and to continue working toward a future where every child is safe.

In February, Oakland Genesis launched our inaugural Internship Fair that brought together youth and families from the Oakland Genesis Academy. Led by our Director of College and Career Counseling, Ron Towns, the internship fair provided a curated list of summer internship opportunities, provided translation into multiple languages, and assisted families in completing applications. We are thrilled with the choices students have made for their summers.

The Oakland Genesis Academy is committed to ensuring that 100% of our students complete an internship or enrichment program before their high school graduation and we are excited to continue hosting events like this throughout the year.

We believe these experiences are essential for high school-aged students. They provide hands-on experience, valuable skills, a clearer sense of interests and career paths, and are crucial for success in college and future careers.

During their biannual visit, they had our Oakland Genesis scholar-athletes buzzing with excitement! From cracking the college application code to scoring financial aid, they covered it all.

Our partnership with YSF started back in 2021 when our scholars were in middle school and just starting to dream big and develop college-going mentalities. Fast forward to today, they’re high schoolers, diving into college visits, exploring passions, and crafting those college lists. 🚀
