Fourteen years ago, Brown Girl Surf launched with a $500 women’s business grant, a t-shirt table at Fort Mason, and a founder who wheeled herself onstage on a scooter with a ruptured Achilles to talk about Bluemind and the ocean’s effect on trauma and our wellbeing.

This month, the same organization awarded Brown Girl Surf a $10,000 grant — this time for our sustainable skin and haircare line.

Brown Girl Surf was not an easy thing to bring into the world— labor, time, personal investment, 40% retirement liquidation, more setbacks than I can count, and compensation of just $4,616 through 14 years.

This grant won’t pay me back. But it will fund half a year of maker space and help build out our website!

To our retail partners, our collaborators, and everyone who has carried this story forward — thank you. You’re part of why this is still standing.

To our Oakland friends — we’re looking for shared maker space. Small, a sink, some natural light. If you know of anything, please share. You’d be directly helping this next chapter take shape.

Women of the Ave. Weekend 3/7 & 3/8

👩🏿‍🤝‍👩🏾👩🏽‍🤝‍👩🏼👩🏿‍🤝‍👩🏻March 8th is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It’s also a day to mark a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

What better way to celebrate than supporting small, local, women-owned businesses! Resurrect() will hosting pop-ups with local women-makers from 12pm - 4pm and we’ll be among them:

Saturday 3/7: Baby Cats of California and Homesewn by Kathe
Sunday 3/8: Harmony Art Shop and Brown Girl Surf

When you shop locally-owned businesses, more of that money stays in the community supporting local jobs, local vendors and services. Women-owned businesses especially tend to reinvest in their neighborhoods, schools and nonprofits.

Other participating small businesses will be hosting fun events, such as pop-ups with local makers, offering discounts or giveaways, having special tasting menus, etc...

Brown Girl Surf’s lineage has always been rooted in storytelling. Our stories began years ago with a simple blog—women sharing their lived relationship with the ocean, culture, and self.

As we continue developing our surf-inspired products rooted in sustainability, care, and love for Mother Earth, we’re also returning to our lineage with our first community programming: Wild Surf Writers, a six-week, in-person women’s writing circle.

This is a space for water women to imperfectly express their inner worlds without judgement or critique. No writing experience needed—just a pen, a notebook, an affinity for water, and a willingness to do your poorest writing.

Come write poorly with us in this curated, salon-style circle on the heels of the Annular Solar Eclipse in Aquarius.

Fifteen years ago, Brown Girl Surf started with a simple storytelling blog, t-shirt shop and page.

There was no huge master plan, only a desire to create at the intersections of storytelling, art, enterprise and social impact. As our community grew, we built relationships, developed partnerships, listened, and attuned to what was emerging.

Some chapters were visible and expansive. Others were quiet, behind the scenes, or only mattered to a handful of people.

What’s stayed constant is this: care for community, love for Mother Earth, and a belief that storytelling, enterprise and social impact can all coexist.

This chapter looks different from the early ones, but it’s rooted in our same values.

If you’ve been here for years — thank you.
If you’ve just joined the journey — welcome! Looking forward to sharing the next chapter of our evolution with you! Happy New Year!
