K2 Pilates Movement Matchmaker

Hi! I'm Krista. I'm a (slightly introverted) human, dog ❤️er, Pilates teacher, hiking & movement enthusiast, and the owner of Montclair Village Pilates since 2016. I don't share on the socials all that much due to shyness (and straight-up busy-ness!), but lately I've had a lot of thoughts and feelings about the Pilates "industry" and the way it interacts with the larger world. So I think I'll share them here and there.

I'm really proud of MVP for lots of reasons, but I think one of the best things about it is that we have a really unique business structure. We host over a dozen Pilates teachers, each of whom has their own diverse training and teaching style, and they all are in charge of their own businesses. Unlike most other Pilates or fitness businesses, we do not have employees. We're not a large corporation, we're not a franchise. We are owned and operated by ME. I act as a teacher, facilitator and Movement Matchmaker, thereby helping my colleagues grow their businesses and build our studio community.

MVP has 2 beautiful studio spaces in the Montclair Village area of Oakland--one for privates, and a new space I opened in November 2022 just for group classes.

MVP tends to attract folks who want to be committed and consistent, and all the teachers who rent space here are truly dedicated to enhancing the well-being and health of their clients. The specialness of this studio reflects the deep care and thought I put into even the smallest aspects of this "labor of love" business.

The first thing I did this year was walk. I wanted to shake up my routine a bit, so I randomly wandered until I reached the Rose Garden. It’s a bit “dormant” at the moment, as it should be. But there were supplies, bags of fertilizer, etc. piled up here and there. Looks a little messy. (Are the metaphors jumping out at us yet?) 😜

The garden reminded me of a thought train I’ve been on before: nothing is ever a finished product. Despite my best efforts. But hopefully I can find some balance between cultivation and chaos.
