From princes and paparazzi to an out-of-sight life in the mountains...

Recently a friend shared the many forms her life has taken over the years.

On my gondola ride back to the car after our , I was thinking about our conversation — rich with memories, laced with lessons and love...

Her left dimple lit up as she talked about a life (literally) in magazines.

Multiple homes around the world... Beautiful cars waiting in each driveway... A household where even the underwear drawers had someone specifically assigned to them!

She smiled as she remembered it all. Not with nostalgia, but with genuine delight!! As if the memories were alive and worth savoring!!

When we set out to create a masterpiece, it begins as a thought in our minds — how we bring it outward to make it a reality may differ for each of us, but the act of bringing it “to life” is the common thread of all successful endeavors.

To this end, I’m an avid listener of podcasts as well as an enthusiastic host, and the new episode of my show the Brain Crops Podcast is out now, featuring the amazing Gino Wickman. We discuss his latest book, “Shine,” which is a great and unique perspective on how inner discovery holds the key to bringing our million dollar ideas into the world in ways that allow true entrepreneurial freedom to be a part of the artistic creation.

A lot of organizations think (hope) they know what to look for in a solid, long-term key player.

Some even have experienced, internal team members dedicated to finding the right-fit.

Yet, many of those same organizations are struggling with wrong-fits, or scrambling when people unexpectedly resign.

The point is: you don’t know what you don’t know, and if you’re not an expert in identifying key indicators of coachable + culture-add candidates, you might recognize qualities you LIKE in an applicant/referral but not necessarily what’s BEST for your organization.

📉 Long-term key players can be hard to attract and it may not be for the reasons you think.

Though unintentional, many organizations have a transactional recruitment process in place, often leading to short-term hires.

Sometimes, even great organizations gain a reputation for being “just like all of the others.” ✌️

If your organization seems to have a revolving door 🚪 whose timing suspiciously correlates with 💶 bonus allocation, it may be time to reevaluate your approach.

Here are some things to consider:

👉 Key players are an organization's valuable customers. Get to know them! Understanding them and demonstrating interest in what is important to them will foster meaningful relationships that lead to long-term success

👉 Have clear organizational goals. This is important for the growth and success of everyone already in the company and critical for attracting other high-performers. Clarity and progress are signs of an organization's trajectory. They tell people how secure their future will be if they join or stay with you.

👉 Paint the picture! Showcasing the company culture, values, and success is a great way for individuals to self-identify if the organization is a match for them.

Shifting the perspective to approach key players as customers will enhance the workplace environment and contribute to building a brand that resonates with employees and external customers.

Discomfort is the opportunity to uncover where you may have self-limiting expectations.

Replacing doctors is expensive (not to mention the 200-300 days post-placement to credential, train, and ramp up production).

So, once you attract the "right" fit, how do you encourage them to stick around? How do you support them so that they are enthusiastic contributors who are engaged in continuous growth?

There is a predictable cycle of emotional experiences key players go through during transitions, including hiring, promoting, and during major changes (keep in mind, "major" will depend on the individual experiencing it).

Understanding and supporting the cycle not only mitigates unnecessary stress and frustration, it provides opportunities to develop lasting relationships and develop leaders who will help grow your organization.
