📢 Oklahoma Judo Association Member Advisory

The Oklahoma Judo Association would like to make our members aware that, as of the time of this post, the tournament scheduled for Saturday, July 18, in Wichita, Kansas is not sanctioned by USA Judo, ATJA, USJA, USJF, or any other recognized national judo organization.

This post is not intended to encourage or discourage anyone from attending. Whether you participate is a personal decision for each athlete and family.

Our responsibility is simply to make sure our members have accurate information when making that decision.

One important consideration is insurance coverage. At sanctioned events, participants generally have access to the secondary accident insurance provided through the sanctioning organization (subject to the terms and conditions of that organization’s policy). Because this tournament is currently unsanctioned, that secondary coverage would not be available if an injury were to occur during the event.

The OJA has communicated with the appropriate parties to verify the event’s current sanctioning status. Based on the information available to us today, the tournament is still expected to proceed as an unsanctioned event.

If the sanctioning status changes before the tournament, we will gladly share that update with our membership.

Our goal is simply to ensure that every OJA member has the information needed to make an informed decision. Thank you, and please travel safely wherever you choose to compete this weekend.

Located in Mustang, Oklahoma, Dominion Academy is committed to developing athletes both on and off the mat through judo, wrestling, and educational services. Founded by Kyle Bowker, the academy’s judo program is led by Sensei Jhonatan Gutierrez, whose leadership is already making an impact.

The Dominion judo team competed this past weekend in Plano and returned home with several medals—a fantastic accomplishment and a great way to begin their journey as part of the OJA family. Congratulations to all of their athletes, coaches, and supporters!

⚠️ Please note: The Oklahoma State Championships are open only to Oklahoma residents who are current members of USA Judo or ATJA and belong to an active, dues-paying Oklahoma Judo Association member club. This event is designed to determine Oklahoma’s official state champions, so eligibility requirements will be strictly enforced.
