Happy World Ballet Day! We’re so grateful ballet brought us together first as teacher/student and then as best friends 💞 And even better, now we have a community of which to share our love of ballet!

This is the week I have to say goodbye to one of my best friends, Kristin. 😢😔 We didn’t get to have our final performance together in April or attend the NYC Ballet workshop in June right before her original move date, but we did get two extra months of time together due to the pandemic pushing her move date (a few times!).🤩
With the pushbacks it’s been easy to think this moment would never get here, but it has, and tonight was our last class at together 😢 I can’t even pretend to be handling it well, especially with so many other aspects of life completely turned upside down as well. But we do have a fun-filled week planned, including filming the duet we were going to perform in April! I also have to say goodbye this week to one of my favorite and longest-running ballet teachers because he is moving as well. Please send all virtual hugs my way!!! 😭😭😢
I know there will be more good things to come because I will will it that way, but right now I feel super sad to be closing another ballet chapter. Closing the one with Abby was so tough - we started a new one, obviously, with BBN! - but it’s not the same as seeing each other in person all the time. I will have more posts about this I’m sure, but please send all comfort vibes our way this week - we are not good at goodbyes!!! 💞 Jana @ Oklahoma City Ballet

I had the pool to myself today so I practiced my swan arms! So many details with the arms alone it’s amazing I ever get the rest of my body to do what it’s supposed to! 😝Jana

HOME DANCE FLOORS! We’ve been getting lots of questions about the flooring in our homes, so here’s what we use!
In the first three photos you’ll notice Abby’s setup is comprised of three layers to emulate a sprung floor! To do this you’ll need:
• interlocking foam mats (, , , )
• plywood sheet(s) (Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc.)
• Marley dance flooring (, )
If you don’t want to go the sprung floor route, you can just get Marley to go over a hard floor like Jana has set up in the last photo. If you are on carpet or uneven tile, we suggest getting plywood for underneath to give yourself a flat, smooth surface for your Marley!
If you’re using multiple pieces of plywood or Marley, tape them together with gaffer tape or duct tape (Harlequin even sells its own clear tape, if you prefer that!)
More detailed blog post here! http://ballerinasbynight.blogspot.com/2020/07/flooring-for-home-dance-space.html
We hope this is helpful! Let us know if you have more questions and please tag us if you set something up at home, cuz we’d love to see it! 💖 Jana & Abby

I recently started getting to take class in-person again!!! My normal classes are still canceled this summer, but I have a small private class I can go to once or twice a week and it has been life-changing! Not only is it thrilling to have space to move around and jump, but the in-person human interaction is priceless. Where are you guys on studio re-openings? How is your motivation at home going? I have been very unmotivated and almost called it quits for awhile until this class opportunity popped up. Even at that, I’m not motivated to do much outside of this. And that’s okay (

I have written and deleted this post probably 20 times trying to figure out what to say right now. There are so many things to catch up on, feelings I want to express, and words that need to be said because we need to keep the BLM movement going. My perfectionist brain is just STUCK trying to fix all of that at once (you can’t, Jana!). But I think before we play catch-up, it needs to be said that Abby & I have been listening and reading and discussing the racism issues in the ballet world and “normal” world a lot in the past few weeks. It has been tough and full of lessons and we’re still navigating it. We’re exploring actions we can do for change, but know that in our personal lives we are working on it and it may not always look like a social media post ❤️. Change is here and we are happy to see small progresses already. Let’s keep it going!! 💞 Jana & Abby
