Omaha Kunst Des Fechtens Focus on the study and application of early Kunst Des Fechtens (The Art of Combat) of Johannes Liectenauer. Medieval longsword, grappling and long knife.

Omaha Kunst des Fechtens was founded in August 15th, 2015 with the purpose of establishing a community focused on the study of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) in the state of Nebraska and surrounding heartland region. We specialize in the early Johannes Liechtenauer tradition of Kunst des Fechtens (KDF), or the Art of Combat. Later to be known as Grand Master Liechtenauer, he is believed to have been active in the late 14th. or early 15th century. We conduct our study based on the Zettel or Recitals attributed to him in surviving sources to practice of the Art of Combat. The recitals emphasized the use of Ringen (Grappling), lance, spear, sword, and messer. In addition, members of our club can take part in independent study groups or extracurricular research of other traditions to supplement our efforts in HEMA. Monday: 06:00PM - 08:30PM - Advanced Course: Invite Only
Wednesday: 06:00PM - 08:30PM - Longsword Class - All Students Welcome
Saturday: 12:00PM - 03:00PM - Open Floor/ Sparring Day - All Students Welcome

๐Ÿ“ข **Attention OKDF Members โ€“ Upcoming Class Schedule**

โš”๏ธ **August 19 & August 26**
Both Wednesday classes will be dedicated to PowerPoint presentations covering the **history of HEMA** and the historical context behind what we practice. Whether you're new or have been with us for years, these sessions will help deepen your understanding of the art beyond the techniques.

๐Ÿ“– **Beginning in September**
We'll be returning to our previous class structure as we begin working through **Liechtenauer's Zettel** once again.

**โš”๏ธ Monday โ€“ Advanced Longsword**
This class is intended for experienced students. Ideally, you should have completed the Zettel with us at least once, as we'll be building upon the material rather than introducing it from the beginning.

**โš”๏ธ Wednesday โ€“ Standard Longsword**
Our primary instructional class and the best place for new and returning students. We'll work through the Zettel together from the ground up.

**๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Saturday โ€“ Open Floor / Rotating Weapons**
Saturday will remain largely unchanged, featuring open sparring, drilling, and rotating classes focused on various historical weapons.

๐Ÿ“… *I will likely take Labor Day (Monday) off this year, but I'll confirm that as we get closer.*

I'm looking forward to getting back into the sources and continuing to **Keep the H in HEMA.**

๐Ÿ… **Auf der Hut 2026 โ€“ Technical Fencer Awards** โš”๏ธ

While medals recognize the outcome of a tournament, the **Technical Fencer Awards** celebrate something different.

These awards honor the fighters who best embodied clean technique, sound fundamentals, tactical decision-making, and the spirit of Historical European Martial Arts. Rather than simply asking who won, we asked: **"Whose Art stood out?"**

Chosen by the competitors themselves:

๐Ÿ† **Day 1 โ€“ Best Display of Skill**
**Sam Halote** โ€“ Chicago Swordplay Guild

๐Ÿ† **Day 2 โ€“ Best Display of Skill**
**Khrystyna Vaziri** โ€“ Chicago Swordplay Guild

๐Ÿ† **Tournament Director's Choice**
**Jack Swanson** โ€“ Omaha KDF

Each of these fencers demonstrated exceptional technical ability throughout the weekend. Their fencing reflected precision, composure, and a deep understanding of the Art, earning the respect of both their peers and the tournament staff.

Congratulations to all three recipients, and thank you for setting such an outstanding example of what historical fencing can be.
