As a swim instructor, the number 1 thing that I see inhibiting a child’s ability to progress in their swimming is the use of a puddle jumper.

These devices are not a learn to swim device. They promote an unsafe vertical body position which places your child in the drowning position. It becomes sort of a muscle memory to be in this position which can lead to drowning when they are not in the puddle jumper.

They also help create a false sense of confidence in the pool. Many kids who wear puddle jumpers think that they are able to swim even without the puddle jumper on. This isn’t the case at all and can lead to a non swimmer getting into the pool when they are not capable of swimming properly.

Lastly, they delay the proper learning and development of water safety and swimming skills. The arm bands are restrictive and don’t allow your child to learn how to naturally float, kick or move through the water.

The best thing you can do for your child when you are swimming at home is to ditch the puddle jumper and allow them to explore buoyancy and try new things in a controlled environment with you right next to them in the water.

Active supervision saves lives.

Did you know that drowning is often silent and can happen in as little as 20-60 seconds? That's why active supervision is one of the most important layers of water safety.

Active supervision means:

* Staying within arm's reach of young or inexperienced swimmers.
*Putting your phone away and avoiding distractions.
* Stay close to the water so you can be close enough to respond immediately if needed.
* If there are multiple adults, designate one "Water Watcher" so everyone knows who is responsible for supervising.

Remember: floaties, lifeguards, and swimming lessons are important, but they never replace an attentive adult.

Your child’s swimsuit may help you spot them quicker.

While no swimsuit is capable of preventing drowning, choosing a bright, high-visibility colour can make it easier to see a child in and under the water. Neon colours like orange, pink, yellow and green are generally easier to spot than colours like blue, white, black, or grey, which can blend into the water or pool floor.

Swimsuit colour is just one layer of water safety.

As you’re shopping for swimsuits this summer, consider choosing one that’s easy to see. It could help you locate your child more quickly if they go underwater.

What colour swimsuit does your child usually wear?
