Understanding Forms
Sometimes the meaning of forms is misunderstood by martial arts practitioners.
What is forms?
First and foremost forms is a method of teaching. Forms were originally created as a method of transmission of techniques. The first thing to learn from forms is techniques. They are the ABC of a particular martial art. We learn stances, blocks, striking techniques and their meaning from a self defense standpoint but you have to learn the proper principles of the body motions to make them efficient. Of course, that won’t be achieved right away, it will require training. So, forms after we learned them will become a method of training , a method of training we can use our entire lives.
Training forms we are going to learn not only techniques. We are going to learn proper breathing, rhythm, balance, body shifting, timing and focus between other important things to build our body for the purposes of self defense.
Learning and memorizing a form ( s) is not enough to accomplish their purpose. You have to train them. Only by constant and consistent training we will achieve the real purpose of learning forms.
Now we need to talked about something that we cannot neglect on forms training : their practical application for self defense.
Training forms were created to prepare trainees for Self Defense. However practicing forms as a solo drill is not enough. You cannot expect to be prepare to use the techniques learning on forms in a real situation by only practicing your forms as a solo exercise. You have to practice those techniques with a partner(s). The original method of teaching and training martial arts was forms. You learn a form then you practice their practical applications with a partner(s). People didn’t learn a lot of different forms. They learned those forms that suited them and practice them their entire lives, as a solo drill and/or a partner drill.
When I say practice the applications in the forms I’m not even talking about hidden applications or those intricate techniques only known by some “ Bunkai specialists “. I’m talking about basic applications of the moves in the forms that anyone can see.
Practicing traditional forms is still the method to learn and improve the techniques in your martial art as well as developing the proper body movements for self defense however you have to practice the techniques contained in a form with a partner(s).
It is up to the practitioners to take the techniques in the forms to another level of understanding, effectiveness or refinement. That is only possible by proper and consistent training.
Keep training my friends.
Good day!
