Join Michelle and Maddie as they explore Black Hammock Wilderness, a 4.5 mile trail in Oviedo. "Come for the tortoise, stay for the oak hammock"

Here are a few highlights:
Lots of creatures, cicadas, frogs, but minimal bugs.
"Rainforest-esque"
Not heavily used, so a perfect choice for physical distancing
Can be difficult to follow the trail at some points, so pay attention as you hike!

Wow Factor: Gogurt the Gopher Tortoise

UCF Outdoor Adventure and value our black community and we stand with you in demanding equal treatment – now and always. ⁣

Good expedition behavior is a core value of our program; it teaches us how to work together toward a meaningful goal. It is characterized as collaborative, empathetic, intentional, and unyielding in its pursuit of the greater good. It teaches us to treat each other with respect, do our share of the work, and deal with conflicts when they occur. Poor expedition behavior is selfish, ignorant of personal faults, and dodges blame and responsibility. ⁣

We can practice good expedition behavior by expressing empathy and compassion for each other, actively listening to others, practicing self-awareness in our perceptions, communication, body language, and tone, accepting responsibility for group needs and personal mistakes, and seeking solutions when we see a problem.⁣

There is a lot of work to be done and a very meaningful goal to accomplish. We are all responsible for the work and we all have a role in the fight. UCF Outdoor Adventure is committed to elevating voices of color, listening to and learning from people who experience injustice, and creating a space where all people feel at home and valued for everything they bring to the table.

“So many of our Knights are hurting right now. Our current climate is infuriating and disheartening, and we know these issues have predated the devastating killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.⁣

Today, we’re participating in to share a resource for racial and social justice and to do what is right at UCF. To continue to listen and learn from one another, stand up and speak out against all forms of discrimination, and to actively advocate for black people.⁣

At UCF, we are here to not only stand in solidarity with you, but to support you. To assure that diversity, in its many forms, is valued. Tap the link in our bio to join the conversation about race and unity at UCF to listen and learn from each other’s stories, happening virtually this Friday.” - .edu
