Owosso Girls' Track and Field
This page is a place to celebrate Owosso girls' track and field athletes and alumni.
Our girls picked up where they left off last season with an 87-50 win over rival Corunna on Tuesday evening. We had many standout performances during the evening, paving the way for what is sure to be a phenomenal season.
Senior captain Libby Summerland earned 20 of the team's point by herself as she won 4 individual events (pole vault, 100m, 200m, and 400m).
Senior captain Peyton Spicer won both high jump and long jump, while taking 2nd in shot put as well as discus.
Gabi Hufnagel had a great meet as well by winning both the 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles as well as leading off in the winning 4x400m relay team (along with teammates Isabel Root, Josie Jenkinson, and Skotti Ball-Duley).
Speaking of Skotti, she made her high school track debut with wins in the 800, 4x400m relay, and 4x800m relay (with teammates Julionna West, Josie Jenkinson, and Emma Crandell).
Desiree Mofield showed off her much improved discus throw with a nice PR and a first place finish to go along with her 1st place finish in shot put.
Isabel Root finished 2nd in both high jump (with a PR jump of 4'8") and pole vault to go along with her team win in the 4x400m relay
Kyle Bermudez earned a pair of 2nd place finishes in the 100m hurdles as well as long jump.
Julionna West not only was a part of the 1st place 4x800 team, she also took 2nd in the 1600m and 3rd in the 800m.
Josie Jenkinson a part of both of the winning 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams.

I am very proud to have brought 5 girls and 1 boy to the state finals track and field meet today and watch them compete hard for one last time this season. Even though it was terribly hot and not everyone was able to earn PRs today, I know how hard these kids worked and couldn't have asked for any more from any of them. We did have 1 PR though, which doubled as a 3rd place, all-state finish from Claire Agnew. After finishing in 2nd place in the state a year ago with a vault of 11'0", Claire improved by an entire foot and didn't miss a single height until her one and only blemish at 12'0", which she cleared on her 2nd attempt. The two girls that beat Claire today also vaulted 12'0", but both made it in their 1st attempt even though it took both of them 3 attempts to made 11'9", and had other misses before that. By rule though, they finished ahead of Claire.
Libby, Peyton and Gabi: I have no doubt that next season will be even greater than this one. Keep working hard...the sky is the limit.
And my seniors: Claire, Emma and Tyler: Thank you for all you have done throughout your years with us. You have not only made an impact on this team, but also on this program, your teammates, the community, and me. I am proud of what you accomplished and who you have each become, and so grateful I could be a part of your journey. I love you all!

Greater Lansing Honor Roll Track and Field Meet of Champions (Girls Results)
Game Date
May 30, 2023
Owosso Girls' track and field had 8 girls compete in the Greater Lansing Honor Roll Track and Field Meet of Champions on Tuesday evening. As there are just shy of 40 teams in the Greater Lansing area and the top 8-16 teams and individuals are invited to compete in the meet per event, it is an honor just to be able to compete. Medals were given to the top 8 finishers in each event. Every girl that competed for Owosso earned a medal.
Our top finisher of the evening was Claire Agnew, who won pole vault with a vault of 11'6".
Libby Summerland finished right behind her in 2nd place with a vault of 10'6", then earned another medal by finishing in 6th place in her 400m dash (1:01.38).
Our next highest finishers were Gabi Hufnagel and Peyton Spicer. Gabi took 5th place in the 300m hurdles, finishing better than her 7th seed and cutting nearly a minute off of her season best time. Her time of 48.67 is the fastest time an Owosso freshman has ever ran, and ties the sophomore record as well. This girl has a bright future in front of her!
Peyton's 5th place finish came in discus where she threw her 2nd best distance of the season of 106'8".
Desiree Mofield earned a 7th place medal in shot put with a throw of 32'9".
Despite a rough start due to the starting gun not being a gun and Kyle getting confused, she still managed to catch back up and win her heat in the 100m hurdles, finishing 8th overall and taking home a medal.
Rounding out out medal performances was the 4x800m relay team of Emma Johnson, Natalie Summerland, Onna West, and Emma Crandell who finished in 8th place (11:45.59).
Claire, Libby, Peyton, Gabi, and Emma J will be traveling to Forest Hills Eastern to compete in the state finals on Saturday.

Congratulations to Claire Agnew for setting another school record in pole vault and winning the Churchill field event meet at 11'9". Another Congratulations to Peyton Spicer for two PRs today in shot put by a foot and a half (34' 9") and discus by over 6 feet (111'11") where she took 7th and 3rd respectively. A third congratulations to Desiree Mofield for a massive PR in shot put by nearly 3 and a half feet (35'2"), which was enough to finish 3rd.

Girls' Varsity Track and Field Regionals
Game Date
May 19, 2023
Owosso girls’ track and field traveled to Frankenmuth on Friday to compete in the regional finals. As Frankenmuth has a very talented team that we didn’t think we could beat, we decided to put athletes in events that they had the best chance to earn medals, PRs, and qualify for the state finals. We did not load up athletes to try to rack up as many points as we could. As a result, we finished in 4th place out of 14 teams instead of potentially finishing 2nd. However, our strategy got us many medals, PRs, and 5 athletes were able to qualify to compete in the state finals in two weeks.
Libby Summerland was the first athlete to punch her ticket to the state finals with her PR performance in pole vault. Despite the rain coming down that made vaulting way tougher, Libby was able to tie for the 2nd highest vault of the day at 10’7” but lost based on misses at previous heights. The top two athletes per event automatically qualify for the state finals, but there is also an additional qualifying standard for each event. For pole vault it is 9’3”, so Libby easily made it through.
Claire was the next to advance just minutes later when she became regional champion of pole vault with another school record vault of 11’7”. It is setting up to be quite the showdown between vaulters at the state finals in two weeks.
It was Libby’s turn again when she hit the track later in a stacked 400m field. There were 4 girls that had already hit the additional qualifying standard in previous meets with a 5th less than .2 seconds away. The race turned out to be a good one and saw Libby finishing 3rd but running under the qualifying standard of 1:01.1 with a time of 1:00.69.
Next up was Peyton Spicer. After a pair of tough 3rd place finishes in high jump (5’) and shot put (31’10”) where she narrowly missed out on qualifying, Peyton was able to overcome adversity and become regional champion in discus. She did give us all a scare though. After throwing 2 out of bounds (throwing disc in the rain is no easy feat), she landed her final throw about a foot from the out of bounds line, qualifying her for finals and eventually winning the whole competition with a throw of 99’0”.
Finally, our last chance to qualify came down to the 4x400m relay team of Gabi Hufnagel, Libby Summerland, Emma Johnson, and Claire Agnew. Under the lights, the last event of the night, this event is already a crowd favorite. However, when these girls stepped on the track as the 5th seed, it became magical. Gabi led the Trojans off to a great start, passing Libby the baton in 2nd place. Libby sprinted around the track, taking over 1st place about halfway through her lap, and held on to the lead as she handed off to Emma Johnson. When Emma, a distance runner who has never been known for her all-out speed, got the baton, I hoped she would be able to hold on enough to give Claire a chance to finish 2nd. After watching Emma run for the past 7 years, I thought I knew exactly what she was capable of. I couldn’t have been more wrong. She didn’t hold on at all, she dominated! Emma found a burst of speed that even she didn’t know she had, tearing around the track and putting distance between herself and 2nd place. When she handed off to Claire, there was no doubt. Claire blazed around the track and the team was able to finish as regional champions. That race was the highlight of the year for me and really showcased the character of this team.
Even though those were the only state qualifying performances of the day, there were many more amazing performances. Kyle Bermudez put down a very fast personal best race in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.69, her best by .34 seconds. Unfortunately, the two girls ahead of her both had similar PR performances and Kyle finished 1 spot out of qualifying for state. However, as a sophomore, Kyle will be a force to be reckoned with in the next two years. She also finished 4th in pole vault with a vault of 8’6”.
Gabi Hufnagel had a great leg in the 4x400m relay, but she also had two other amazing races on the day. Gabi took an entire second off her 100m hurdle time on her way to a 6th place finish at 17.65. Her best race of the night though was in the 300m hurdles. Seeded in 4th place, Gabi put together an incredible race, cutting 1.5 seconds off her time, but finished just .03 seconds out of 2nd place. I can’t wait to see what this hard-working freshman is able to do in the years to come.
Other regional medal performances:
Emma Crandell finished with two regional medals on the day. She earned a 4th place finish in the 3200m and was a part of the 6th place 4x800m relay team along with teammates Emma Johnson, Julionna West, and Gracie Meyer, who agreed to run the relay at the last minute when her sick teammate was not able to compete. It was Gracie’s first 800m race as she is a sprinter and she held her own really well.
Desiree Mofield made the final 9 in discus, where she earned a PR, but just missed out on a top 8 medal. However, she finished with a 5th place medal in shot put (30’9”).
Other PRs include:
Khloe Muzzy took a half of a second off her 100m with a time of 14.45. She has improved a ton this season and gets faster every time she steps on the track.
Julionna West ran 6:02.42 for her personal best 1600m.
Isabel Root had a 3” PR in high jump with a jump of 4’6”.
I couldn’t be prouder of this team and how they competed all season. I am so blessed to be able to coach such an amazing group of young ladies. I am very sad to be losing 3 seniors next season, but very excited to bring back so many girls. A special shout out to senior Courtney Lott who competed in her final track meet. Court, thank you for all of your hard work these past 4 years and everything you have brought to Owosso track and field. You will be missed!
I am excited to be able to coach the other two seniors for the next couple weeks still. State finals, here we come!

Flint Metro League Champions!!
Game Date
May 12, 2023
For only the 2nd time ever, and the first time since 1998, our Owosso girls are the Flint Metro League track and field champions! After beating Goodrich in a dual meet last week for a regular season perfect record, we still entered the conference championship meet as underdogs to Goodrich. On paper, Goodrich was supposed to beat us by around 10 points or so. However, as has been the case this entire season, our Trojans stepped up and showed what they are made of. Event after event our girls stepped up and overachieved, turning our would be loss into a staggering 32 point win! To say that I am proud of what we were able to do on Friday would be an understatement. I am in absolute awe of this team and how much they wanted this. I would like to extend a huge thank you to my 3 co-coaches for their roles in this victory. Coach Gillett's girls finished 1st and 3rd in shot put, and 1st and 6th in discus. Coach Grinnell's pole vaulters took 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place! Coach Crandell's girls broke up the distance powerhouse that is Goodrich with finishes of 2nd and 4th in the 3200, 3rd in the 1600, 4th and 6th in the 800, and 2nd in the 4x800 relay.
When it comes to individual results, we had some very impressive performances. However, none were bigger than Peyton Spicer's three conference championships! Peyton put on an absolute spectacle on Friday. She began her day by winning high jump with a jump of 5'0". She then shocked the field by throwing a 2 and a half foot PR in shot put and winning the event (33'2.5"). That throw also puts her just 1.5 inches out of 2nd place in the region. Peyton's third stop of the evening was her debut in long jump, where despite never have doing before, she was able to earn a 4th place finish with a jump of 13'11.5". Her 4th event (all field events!) was discus, where Peyton added another foot to her PR and won with a toss of 105'2". A truly impressive performance for a remarkable young lady.
The next most impressive performance of the night was the collective group of our pole vaulters. They stole the show by taking 21 of the 31 points of the event, including 2nd-5th place. Even after running in the 4x100m relay and 400m dash (with a PR time and 5th place finish of 1:04.29), Claire Agnew still managed to tie her PR with a vault of 11'6". Claire nearly made it over 12' and is ready for big things in the next few weeks. Finishing in third place with a PR vault of 10'6" was Libby Summerland (more on Libby later). 4th place went to Kyle Bermudez with a season record tying vault of 8'6". Finally, with a PR of 7'6", first year vaulter Isabel Root took the 5th spot.
Linden's coach said it best when he referred to Libby Summerland as a Swiss Army knife. The girl can do anything. When the meet was over, she had done just that. Libby finished with four 3rd place finishes on the day. Libby vaulted a PR 10'6", ran a 200m PR of 27.38, a season record 100m time of 13.85 (.01 from 2nd place), and her second fastest 400m with a time of 1:00.66, which is a half a second faster than the time required to qualify to run at the state meet if she does it at regionals next week.
Kyle Bermudez keeps getting better and better. As mentioned earlier, she finished 4th in pole vault, but that wasn't her best performance. Kyle finished 3rd with her teammates (Claire Agnew, Gabi Hufnagel, and Khloe Muzzy) in the 4x100m relay, and 3rd in long jump with a jump of 14'4.5". Her most impressive finish however, was in the 100m hurdles. A week after a breakout meet in the event, Kyle cut even more time with a 2nd place finish and PR of 17.03. That run seeds Kyle 3rd in the region, but she beat the current 2nd place seed head to head by .01, setting up quite the showdown next week at regionals for a chance to compete in the state finals.
The toughest girl at the meet on Friday has to be none other than Emma Crandell. I did to Emma what I said I would never do to an athlete. She ran the 4x800m relay, the 800m, the 1600m, and the 3200m all in the same meet. I put her through the gauntlet and she didn't complain a single time. Not only did she run the furthest 4 distance events, she came away with two 2nd place finishes, a 3rd, and a 4th. Emma started the evening earning 2nd team all-conference honors in the 4x800m relay with teammates Emma Johnson, Onna West, and Natalie Summerland. She then finished 3rd in the mile with a 10 second PR of 5:36.41. Next she finished 4th in the 800m with a PR time of 2:38.97. Finally, even after all of that, Emma still had enough left to finish 2nd place in the 3200m with a time of 12:26.55.
In addition to her legs in the 3rd place 4x100m and 4x400m (with teammates Emma Johnson, Claire Agnew, and Natalie Summerland) relays, Gabi Hufnagel had a strong performance in the 300m hurdles, finishing 2nd and earning 2nd team all conference honors with a time of 51.88.
Desiree Mofield had a great day in the throws and earned herself all conference honorable mention honors in shot put with a 3rd place throw of 31'2". She then was able to finish 6th in discus with a personal best toss (by nearly 6 feet) of 81'2".
In addition to earning 2nd team all conference honors as mentioned earlier in the 4x800m relay, Onna West had 2 more scoring performances. First, she took 6th place in the 800 with a season best time of 2:46.9. Next, Onna finished 4th place in the 3200m run with PR time of 13:40.34.
