There are many questionable opinions when it comes to the topic of drowning prevention & water safety- one being that supervision alone will prevent a child from drowning. While supervision during swim times is a must, drowning often happens at NON-SWIM times.

This means that children are making it to water when their caregiver has ended swim time to bring everyone in for lunch. Or at a playdate where there is a doggy door that leads to a backyard pool. Or at a summer rental where there is no safety fence or door alarms 😞

Simply put, these accidents happen when water safety is not top of mind because the child is not supposed to be swimming. So what can we do to make drowning more preventable?

💧 Supervision during swim times, as mentioned, is the first layer of protection. We recommend getting in with your child to set yourself up for success...eyes on, arms reach, cell phone out of sight out of mind!

💧Barriers are next.. think door alarms, pool fences, child locks...anything that can make access to water more difficult.

💧The third layer-high quality swim lessons that teach your child survival skills- is where we come in! ISR gently and safely skills even the youngest among us to realize their own natural amazing ability to self rescue 👶🏽🥰When your little one is developmentally ready, their ISR Instructor will teach them to swim too!

💧Lastly, learn CPR...we should all know this lifesaving technique so that we can respond quickly in the event of an accident while we wait for professional help to arrive.

Grateful for families who trust me with what matters most 🤍
This is why I do what I do.

"Lupe was an amazing instructor. She taught us as parents a lot as well. We are first time parents and Lupe made sure we were comfortable the entire process. My daughter can now safely play in water and has a plethora of survival skills. I cannot thank Lupe enough, it's no mystery why people bring their kids back, she's just too lovable. - K.G."

Many of us learned how to swim in a traditional lesson environment that likely included a flotation device- maybe it was a noodle, or a floating barbell, or a "bubble" strapped to our backs. So why doesn't ISR utilize any of these items in their lessons?

The reason is simple- devices teach postures that are not compatible with survival when the device isn’t in use🚫

When our children hang onto a noodle or a foam barbell, their little heads are up & out of the water. Remove the noodle and they are doggie paddling which is inefficient and exhausting 😩

When our children are wearing a flotation device of some kind as a swim aid, the device keeps them bobbing above the surface of the water in a vertical position, bicycling their way around the pool effortlessly. Remove the device and those easy bicycle kicks turn into a frantic attempt to tread water, which they cannot do for long (if at all) and they can silently slip beneath the surface😔

ISR will teach your child to be their OWN flotation device, by skilling your little one to roll to their backs and maintain a float to rest and breathe 💙

Why ISR Works - This is why repetition and consistency matter in ISR 💙

Even the tiniest superheroes need a plan! In ISR lessons, kids learn their Self-Rescue® skills — giving them the superpowers they need if they ever find themselves in the water alone.

We see you, weekend! 👀

When our swim parents see photos or video of their skilled child under water for the first time, they often remark that they didn’t realize how open their eyes are! This is a crucial element of ISR…we want your little one to be able to see their way out of the water whenever possible. If they can look around to find the steps, wall, ladder etc they can more easily make their way to safety 💙 They also look ridiculously cute doing so, don’t they?!

You might hear about survival or self-rescue lessons and think that any program labeled as such is going to offer the same thing. While the outcomes can look similar (ie: a baby learning to float) the lesson experience and the level of safety can be very different. Here are a few key differentiators of ISR that have helped to make us the global leader in survival swim lessons for over 50 years 💙

💦Certified ISR Instructors utilize many strict safety protocols and have the guidance/support of a team of nurses to provide the safest, most customized lesson experience for each student. All students are medically reviewed by this team of nurses prior to beginning lessons.

💦Certified ISR instructors go through extensive training- anatomy, physiology, behavioral science, etc.- and have annual recertification requirements to keep their knowledge and skills current.

💦Certified ISR instructors will never, ever throw a child into the pool. All techniques used to teach survival skills, as well as all simulations of ways a child could fall in water, are done in a gentle and controlled manner.

💦Certified ISR Instructors use this combination of training, experience and safety support to gently + effectively teach young children to self rescue and swim 💙

It's hard to imagine our infants ever getting to water alone, making it easier to rationalize putting lessons off. BUT...our tiny babies turn into curious, strong, and capable toddlers in the blink of an eye, which is why ISR's motto is the sooner the safer 💙

Equipping your baby with the ability to self-rescue means they will carry a potentially life-saving skill with them into toddlerhood. Once they master walking & running, they will be able to return to their ISR Instructor to progress the rollback to float skill they already learned into a swim-float-swim sequence.

In short, little ones who learned as infants are not only safer near water sooner, but they typically have an easier time learning their "big kid" skills, given they already know how to get to (and maintain) a float!

Oh the one. The mischievous one. The one with no fear. The one who gives mom and dad gray hair! 👵🏽😵‍💫So many of us know and love one of these babes who keeps their caregivers on their toes! So what to do when it comes to water?

Harness that curiosity and incredible ability they have by enrolling them in ISR, where they can learn independent skills that keep their “thrills” safer 💪👏
