Case update ❤️‍🩹

If there is one thing this journey has continued to prove to us, it’s that family will forever be the best therapy.

The laughs. The familiar faces. His siblings being ridiculous. The hugs, the encouragement, and simply getting little pieces of normal back. There are some things medicine can’t provide, and watching Case light up when he is surrounded by the people he loves has been one of the greatest gifts throughout all of this.

We are so incredibly thankful.

Thankful for how far he has come. Thankful for every doctor, nurse, therapist and person who has cared for him. Thankful for the people who continue to show up for our family in ways big and small. And so unbelievably thankful that we get to watch our boy get stronger every single day.

Because he is getting stronger.

Debridement, dressing changes, wound care and showers are still incredibly difficult. There is nothing easy about watching your child endure those things over and over again. But the difference in Case from even a few weeks ago is incredible. He is stronger. He is braver. He is learning what his body can handle, and every day he pushes himself just a little bit further.

Now we are getting ready for the next chapter: rehabilitation.

I truly believe these next steps are going to be some of the best and hardest steps Case has taken yet.

Rehab means work. A LOT of work. It means pushing when he’s tired, moving when it hurts, stretching when he doesn’t want to, rebuilding strength and independence, and learning to trust his body again.

But rehab also means we are moving forward.

It means healing.

It means getting stronger.

It means getting one step closer to HOME. ❤️

We know the next month isn’t going to be easy. There will be hard days, tears, frustration and probably plenty of moments where all of us are exhausted.

But if there is one thing this kid has shown us, it’s that he knows how to fight.

So our plan for the month ahead is pretty simple:

Kick ass and take names. 💪🏼❤️‍🩹

And we’ll do it the same way we’ve gotten through every day since this happened… together.

To our village, our racing family, our friends, our families, and even complete strangers who continue to reach out, pray, check on us, send things, donate, share Case’s story or simply remind us that we aren’t walking through this alone… thank you.

You have made an unbearable chapter of our lives a little more bearable. There really aren’t words big enough to explain what that has meant to our family.

We still have a long road ahead of us, but damn, look how far our boy has already come.

One day at a time. One dressing change at a time. One therapy session at a time.

Keep going, Caser Bug. We’re right here with you. ❤️‍🩹

Hospital Day 40 ❤️‍🩹

40 days.

I genuinely can’t even put into words how to describe this weekend or this past week. It all seems like such a blur as we continue to make strides every single day.

But this kid… this kid is absolutely killing it on every level.

He’s pushing. He’s working. He’s healing. ❤️‍🩹

And watching him slowly come back to the kid I’ve always known… the boy who has forever stolen my heart, my firstborn, my sweet baby boy… has been the most genuine and grateful kind of joy I could ever try to describe.

This weekend we had a birthday party for Cadence, who requested that her birthday be at the hospital with her big brother no matter what. 🥹

I was skeptical. I was nervous. My anxiety was through the freaking roof wondering if it would be too much for Case.

But Case showed up.

And I mean HE SHOWED UP.

He laughed. He talked. He joked. He enjoyed himself. He was surrounded by people he loves, and he did so incredibly well that we actually extended everything for another TWO HOURS.

Oh, how grateful I am. How beautiful it was to watch. ❤️

And somehow, my village just keeps showing up.

Case’s uncles, grandpa, aunts, and the best friends who have long since earned the title of “aunt” went above and beyond.. and then got up at the crack ass of dawn the very next morning just to do it all over again and surround him with their presence for breakfast.

That kind of love is something I will never be able to repay.

This hospital. These nurses and doctors. Our family. Our friends. Our community. Our entire village.

You have carried us through some of the absolute hardest days of our lives, and now you’re getting to stand beside us while we finally start seeing more and more of the good ones.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Now for what comes next for Case…

Right now, we have a couple different possibilities ahead of us. We may be headed to an inpatient rehabilitation center here in OKC so Case can continue working hard on therapy and independence, or we may be looking at another patch graft surgery.

A lot of things are still up in the air because his body continues to heal and change every single day, and his doctors are making decisions based on exactly what he needs as he progresses.

But either way…

We’re here.
We’re stronger than ever.
And we’re pushing through every obstacle put in front of us.

Forty days ago, I couldn’t see past the next minute.

Now I can finally say the word HOME and feel like maybe, just maybe, it isn’t so impossibly far away. 🥹❤️‍🩹

We love you. We appreciate you. And we are finally on the up and up toward getting our baby boy home sometime in the hopefully-near future.

Keep praying. Keep surrounding my baby boy and our family with love.

It’s all we need. It’s all we want.

Y’all have been absolutely amazing, and I could never, ever thank you enough. ❤️‍🩹

Hospital Day 40. Keep going, Case. We’re getting there. ❤️

Update on our sweet Caser Bug! 💙

We’re being EVICTED from the PICU!! 🥹🙌🏼 And while Case is not exactly thrilled about it, this is a HUGE step toward healing and recovery.

His heart is a little broken today. Change is hard, especially after spending so much time with the same people who have cared for him through some of the hardest days of his life. These PICU nurses and doctors have our hearts in a completely different way. Their faces, their care, their patience, and most importantly, the way they have loved my son and our entire family is something we will never forget. There truly aren’t enough words to thank them for what they’ve done for us. 💙

This next chapter means lots and lots of therapy and Case learning to do more things on his own again. Big steps. Hard steps. Probably some frustrating steps. But every single one of them is another step toward getting our boy back home. 🫶🏼

Case has yet another swallow study today, and we are praying BIG that he passes this one completely because this kid is beyond ready for a CHEESEBURGER. 😂🍔 Seriously… pray for the cheeseburger at this point!

As always, thank you for continuing to follow Case’s story, for loving our boy, and for every single prayer that continues to be sent his way. Those prayers are NOT going unanswered. We see it. We feel it. We are watching them work right in front of us. So please keep being the prayer warriors that you are. 🙏🏼💙

Seeing our community, our racing family, and especially Case’s friends care so deeply about him has given him something extra to fight for. He sees it. He knows it. And he is so incredibly appreciative, y’all truly have no idea. 🥹🫶🏼

Keep pushing, Caser Bug. One hard step at a time.

We love you all. 💙

Hospital Day 25 — Case Clay 💙

We have our good days, and we have our bad days.

But if I’m being honest, Case may be struggling, but the way he chooses to power through it, through every tear, every painful moment, every frustration is another level of brave that I’m not sure I would have in me.

I commend his tired little body for continuing to fight. I commend the nurses and therapists who refuse to let him give up, who push him when he doesn’t think he can do anymore, and who continue to remind him just how strong he really is.

Yesterday’s swallow study went okay. There has been an enormous improvement in the swelling in his throat, which we are incredibly thankful for. He still hasn’t been cleared for thin liquids, but I truly believe we are getting very, very close and if you know Case, you know he is SO SO ready for that day. 🥹

Through all of this, we are also still fighting high fevers. His little body is working overtime trying to heal from so much at once, and the fevers are another thing we continue to watch and work through with his medical team. It feels like every time we conquer one thing, there’s another battle waiting for him.. but he just keeps going.

We still plan to have his throat scoped before surgery tomorrow. Case still has no voice, which honestly just sucks. It’s frustrating for all of us, but especially for him. One of the biggest concerns right now is whether there has been any damage to his vocal cords.

And I won’t lie, I am anxiously unwell waiting for those answers. It feels like it’s the only thing my brain has allowed me to think about for the last solid 48 hours. I just want answers, and more than anything, I want to hear my boy’s voice again.

Tomorrow’s surgery will focus on his little neck and face. We have two amazing surgeons who we fully trust to rock this, but as always, please say an extra prayer for Case tomorrow. Pray for strength, steady hands, successful grafting, pain control, healing, for these fevers to finally stay away, and everything else you can possibly think of. ❤️

Tomorrow is going to suck.

Knowing they’ll once again be taking Case’s own skin for donor sites hurts my heart because I know what comes afterward. I know how painful those donor sites are. I know what the next couple of days will look like, and knowing what my sweet baby boy is about to endure again is hard.

But this kid continues to remind me exactly who he is.

I have to share this because it made my momma heart swell. His speech therapist is seriously the sweetest. She has gone above and beyond to be thorough with Case and to advocate for him through all of this. She has an upcoming procedure of her own, and when Case found out, my sweet son was more concerned about her… what she was having done, what it would mean for her, and whether she would be okay than he was about everything he has going on himself.

Tell me how selfless that is. 🥹

Twenty-five hospital days. Countless procedures. Surgeries. Pain. Fear. Therapy. Tears. High fevers. And somehow, in the middle of everything happening to him, he still has room in that heart to worry about someone else.

That’s Case. 💙

Dad is coming back tonight, and Case is SO ready to see him.

And truthfully, so am I.

As always, to every single incredible human who continues to pray, check on us, support our family, love our kids, and carry pieces of this weight with us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We still have a long road ahead, but we’re still here. We’re still fighting. And most importantly, Case is still fighting.

We love you all. 🫶🏼💙

Time. There’s never enough time. 💙

Case had a very special surprise this weekend, and I don’t think I can put into words what it did for his little spirit.

Logan came to see him. ❤️

Case cried so hard. He talked. He opened up. And honestly, for a little while, I saw a piece of him come back. He became a little more motivated, a little more himself, and it was exactly what his heart needed.

Thank you, Logan, for coming to see Case. I promise you it meant the absolute world to him. We love you so much. These two usually spend most of their time together, and since they met, I’m not sure they’ve ever gone more than two weeks without seeing each other. 🫶🏼 This has been a long time apart for two boys who are normally inseparable.

As far as healing goes… Case’s little hands are doing AMAZING. His surgery was only five days ago, and they truly look so good. Everything is healing and doing what it’s supposed to do, and we are so grateful for every bit of progress.

Tomorrow he will have another swallow study. He still hasn’t been cleared to drink water, and at this point I truly think the lack of water might be the thing that takes him out. 😅😂 If you know Case, you know how serious he is about his water.

Wednesday is another big day. Before surgery, they will scope his throat so they can get a better look at what damage is going on and hopefully give us more answers. Then it’s back to the OR again.

But today… HE CRACKED JOKES. Actual jokes.

In the middle of everything his little body has endured, the pain he continues to push through, the surgeries, the dressing changes, the therapy, and all of the things that have been taken away from his normal life somehow, he still found something to joke about.

That felt huge.

His heart continues to amaze me. He is constantly worried about whether we are okay. Mom, Dad, his brothers and sister… he worries about all of us when he is the one lying in that hospital bed fighting every single day.

And as his mom, that part is hard.

I wish there was more I could do. I wish I could take every ounce of pain from his body and carry it myself. I wish I could give his fragile body all the strength it needs for what is still ahead.

Being in a hospital bed takes so much strength from your body, and we know rehabilitation is going to be another fight of its own. But I am ready to watch him fight for it. I’m ready to watch him get stronger. I’m ready for these major surgeries to be behind us, and I pray the surgeries he may need later down the road are nothing compared to what he has endured these last few weeks.

And I know he is ready to get his little face functioning more. The Oasis is doing exactly what it is supposed to do… but man, it definitely sucks. 😅

We still have a long road ahead of us. Some days feel impossibly long, and somehow there still never seems to be enough time.

But today he joked.

Today he was motivated.

Today his hands looked beautiful.

Today we saw another little piece of Case coming back.

And right now, those are the moments we hold onto. 💙

Please keep praying for our boy, for healing, strength, his upcoming swallow study, Wednesday’s scope and surgery, and for his spirit to keep fighting as hard as his body is.

One day at a time. One surgery at a time. One little victory at a time.

We love you, Case. Keep fighting, baby. 💙

What a day for Kyle Larson yesterday! 🔥

30th to 6th at Richmond, jumps on a plane and heads straight to Knoxville, wins the damn thing, and STILL takes the time to send Case a video. That’s pretty damn cool. 🙌

Getting a video from Case’s favorite driver made his day and put a huge smile on his face. Moments like that mean more than people will ever know.

Thank you, Kyle Larson, for taking the time to make Case’s day. You’re one hell of a driver, but even better, you’re one hell of a guy! 🏁❤️
