The Aviators Foreward

THE FLIGHT BEGINS

There comes a moment in every athlete's journey when learning to follow the rules is no longer enough.

First, you learn the fundamentals.

You learn the mechanics.
You learn the systems.
You learn the timing.
You learn discipline.
You learn to repeat what you've been taught until it becomes something you can trust.

And that matters.

Because you cannot explore what you do not understand.

But there is a moment beyond mastery.

A moment when the fundamentals become so deeply understood that they no longer confine you.

They free you.

That is where the Aviators begin.

A pitcher is often taught to think about her body as a collection of mechanics.

Her arm.
Her stride.
Her release.
Her timing.
Her rotation.

But what if she could learn to see herself differently?

What if her body were the aircraft?

What if the mechanics were its systems?

What if the fundamentals were flight training?

What if the mound were the runway, the game were the mission, and every difficult hitter represented another challenge waiting to be solved?

Then pitching becomes something more than repetition.

It becomes exploration.

The question changes from:

“How do I do this correctly?”

to:

“What can I do with this?”

That question requires something special.

Not recklessness.

Not carelessness.

Something much more courageous.

Reckless abandon.

The kind that appears when someone knows the fundamentals so deeply that she is no longer afraid to leave the safe, predictable path and explore possibility.

It is not abandoning discipline.

It is what becomes possible because discipline has already been mastered.

It is the willingness to test the limits.

To experiment.

To fail.

To learn.

To try again.

To discover that the boundaries she once thought were fixed may have been nothing more than the edges of what she had been taught to imagine.

That is where extraordinary athletes begin to emerge.

And perhaps, more importantly, that is where extraordinary people begin to emerge.

Aviators are not simply those who can execute the mechanics.

An Aviator is willing to learn what most people don't care to learn.

She studies the aircraft.

She learns its systems.

She respects the fundamentals.

She prepares for the difficult mission.

And when the moment comes, she is willing to trust what she has learned enough to fly.

Because the goal isn't to make every pitcher fly the same aircraft.

The goal is to teach each pitcher how to fly hers.

And maybe that's the greatest gift of all.

Because somewhere along the way, a young pitcher may suddenly realize:

I'm not just learning how to pitch.

I'm learning how to understand something complicated.

I'm learning how to master something difficult.

I'm learning how to make decisions under pressure.

I'm learning how to trust preparation.

I'm learning how to explore what I'm capable of.

I'm learning that mastery isn't the end of the journey.

It's the beginning of the flight.

And perhaps that is why this story belongs in Pensacola.

A city whose history is inseparable from the sky.

A city that became home to generations of people willing to learn the things most others never needed to learn—to master machines, systems, discipline and courage for missions that demanded something beyond ordinary skill.

A city with an aviation legacy worth remembering.

A city with a story worth reviving.

And perhaps a new generation waiting to discover what that story means to them.

Not through a history lesson.
Through experience.
Through sport.
Through imagination.

Through the simple, extraordinary realization that the world looks different when you learn to see yourself as capable of more.

There is an old image of an eagle rising into the wind.

It does not become powerful by fighting the wind.

It learns how to use it.

It rises.

It catches the current.

It spreads its wings.

And it soars.

“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles…”

Perhaps that is the deeper meaning of an Aviator.

Not simply learning how to fly.

But discovering that you were never meant to spend your entire life on the ground.

So learn the aircraft.

Master the systems.

Respect the fundamentals.

Prepare for the mission.

Then—

when the moment comes—

Rise.

Explore.

Master.

Soar.

Welcome to Aviators of Fastpitch.

The flight begins here.

So proud of yall! Keep flying high, spread those wings and soar!

If you already have it in your mind that there’s something wrong about a person, situation, or whatever is in front of you..you’ll find the “something wrong.” Sadly, the truth is that we use it as a reason to not like it, them, or again whatever the case may be.

No. Not because there’s something “wrong” with everybody. And we all need to extend a little more grace. Sure; that’s very true and helpful, no doubt.
I’m talking about perception. I’m talking about motive.

Fault-finding exposes “flaws” in others and it eats up all your time, everybody else’s energy, and is never helpful.

Do you feel satisfied after you spend hours trying to “figure out” why you hate everybody around you?

Listen, I’ve lived on both sides of the fence. I’ve been through, seen things, experienced situations I wouldn’t even share with my worst enemy if I had one because I don’t want to out any living soul through the hell Ive walked through. Ive been pulled straight outta darkness and I don’t want anybody to go to that place ive been rescued from. Even years later, discovering the truth.. that these horrifying situations that I “got myself into” well, some of them (not all, some) turned out to be purposefully staged and designed by others who didn’t like me so that I’d slip and fall. Because they thought I had all these problems that I didn’t actually have. The calculated downfall, demise, that they’ll never have to take responsibility for or even be held accountable for (this side of heaven that is) and I share that to emphasize the matter at hand..

This is the fruit we get when Jesus ain’t at the center.

What do you do. I didn’t know until I found one thing that mattered above all that nasty entanglement I could never seem to get away from or defeat on my own… forgive them and move on, don’t carry that stuff around with you.

At all costs.

Raise the bar. Focus on something else. Lest the bullied become the bully.

Yall. Not tolerating bullies doesn’t mean lashing out, doesn’t even mean calling them out, and it certainly doesn’t mean avenging yourself publicly by slandering the slanderer.

I’m attempting to create an environment for education with an open heaven. But an open heaven starts with an individual and the decisions that one makes each day in their heart, to think better, to focus on life not death, to let hope overtake the little annoyances we have, the issues that we take in because everybody around us is frustrated about it but it really ain’t that serious..

This is no easy gig we have here. To drown out all that noise and think “positively” if you want to call it that. What about when you sit back and just think for yourself. Think your own thoughts for a minute.
What are your thoughts telling you today. What is your goal for the day, how do you want to see your friends, your teammates, your family, your neighborhood?

I bet they’re different than what you heard last night at wherever you were, doing whatever you were doing.

I’m not saying you have to follow the same road I took but I highly recommend it. There’s a tree of life that produces fruit all year long in this road. And it’s not for everyone but it was made for everyone. When I put myself in this tree and walk this path, my head clears, my eyes shift, and I see differently. I hear and I think differently. And it produces more life-giving fruit.
And it really changes things. Not just in me but around me.

The chatter and the complaining, the backbiting, fades into a muted distant place and I laugh at things I once held onto so tightly that just aren’t that big of a deal. I collaborate better, I smile more. And man if I didn’t work harder from this place… there lights a fire in me that is unstoppable and it doesn’t come from white knuckling, trying to prove myself something, self-motivated grit and grind.
It’s other worldly. Because this doesn’t exist in the world.

The world doesn’t naturally love other people. Doesn’t want to work for the common good, doesn’t have compassion for anything, the world calls it empathy, and to have empathy you have to have gone through that thing to relate to a person and again I aim for you to avoid that dark and dreadful path at all costs. I don’t want to empathize with you. I have to be in a position to pull you up out of your situation so you can breathe that fresh air and look. And look again. At what’s around you.

I guess I just wanted to say if you feel that everything around you is kind of chaotic all the time and confusion is the main player rather than hope and clarity..
Again I’m not suggesting that I live some life now without problems or obstacles or things to overcome.. the opposite is way more true.
Because I choose everyday to go the narrow way I actually get hit with more difficulties and there’s a reason for that, but what I do have are the tools I need to be victorious in any situation.

Failures become W’s because of where my heart is at.
Thoughts that are good about what everybody is complaining about arise and it’s not denial. It’s truth. I’m not even focused on what others are burning a hole through.
I’m over here disciplining my thoughts and we passed that thing a long time ago and now I’m joyfully making myself a better team player because I found a better way to live everyday not being the center of my own universe.

Jesus at the center. I am living proof of this (and I’m preaching to the choir today..)
“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. THEN all these things will be added to you” all the stuff, all the things we desire, that stuff starts to change when we seek the kingdom first. And then.. he still adds it to us. And usually when we forgot we even wanted it. And it’s fruit that gives life. To us, to others, everybody benefits from it.

If you want to try something different. Let me know. Maybe we’ve got something for you. A

We’re all in this together.

Nothing says victory like a Blue Angels es**rt on a Sunday ride home from the softball field. So proud of my girls. You braved some unprecedented heat. I’ve never seen or felt anything quite like it. Not only did you brave it, but you “stayed cool” and didn’t waiver in your attitude, your faith, and you brought it home big time. Keep it up!

You are not behind. You are not a failure. You’re being forged for greatness and swords are shaped by fire and by the swing of a hammer. Not handed to you on the mountaintop. It’s hard, but the lesson is priceless - when you are able to evaluate your situation apart from outside influence. Keep going. Well said 🔥

“I wish someone would’ve told 15-year-old me this.”

You are NOT behind.

Someone else being better than you right now doesn’t mean they always will be.

Someone committing before you doesn’t mean you’re failing.

Someone throwing harder, getting more attention, playing on the “better” team, or having more success doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you.

I wasted way too much energy comparing my path to everyone else’s.

And FAILURE? I thought failure meant I wasn’t good enough.

Now I know failure was probably one of the greatest teachers I ever had.

The bad games. Getting my ass kicked. Not being picked. Questioning myself. Feeling like everyone else was moving forward while I was standing still.

None of it meant I was behind.

I was becoming the athlete I needed to become.

I just wish I understood that at 15.

It’s one of the reasons I’ve written so much about the mental side of this game. I want young athletes to have some of the 💩 I didn’t have.
