Taxidermy Tech

Comments

I just wanted to say a few words about Ken Darville and his talents as an instructor. I asked Ken to put together an advanced training on competition whitetail taxidermy. Over the course of about two weeks, he had an overview of a 5 day course that covered the areas of whitetail work I need help with. All I can say is WOW oh what fun we had working on two shoulder mounts.
If your thinking about getting started in taxidermy or just want to learn more about mounting whitetail deer then there’s no limit to what you could learn from Mr. Ken. He’s set up to teach with lots of knowledge in all areas of taxidermy, and his method of explaining the “how to do something “, is top notch. Feel free to contact me at+12564608751 and I’ll explain to you about my learnings from Ken.

Respectfully
Michael Stevens.
Just wanted to share the great experience I had at Taxidermy Tech. Ken is very talented and a fantastic teacher. I learned so many reference points and the process from skinning all the way to mounting. I would highly recommend Taxidermy Tech for anyone with an interest in the field. I will be opening my own shop very soon!
I have finally had some time to set back and reflect on my time at Taxidermy Tech. I had looked into many different courses over the last few years debating on which route to go, I first heard about Ken’s program through a friend and he sent me to the page. After a little push from my wife I decided to take the plunge, Ken’s class stood out to me because I noticed right away it was one on one, and it did not disappoint!! I was concerned about taking in to much information in a short amount of time, but the process that Taxidermy Tech offers makes it very easy to step through each principle and retain every ounce of knowledge gained. I would highly recommend this program for anyone who is interested in learning the art of taxidermy Ken is a class act , and a very honest guy, we spent some late nights going over the points I was struggling with and by Friday my confidence level in my ability had far exceeded my expectations, I want to thank Ken for his time , and the effort he puts in this training. I would recommend this training to anyone!!
Where do I begin? Let’s start off with the owner Ken Darville. The first time I spoke with him over the phone about the program he was VERY helpful and answered all of my questions. He and I worked out a week for Brian and I to start the program. On our first day there, we walked in and Ken made the two of us feel very welcomed! Ken is an awesome instructor and knows his taxidermy. ( Im pretty sure there is not another taxidermist instructor out there that is as good as he is when it comes to teaching taxidermy.) Now on to the class. I learned so much in just 5 days and will continue to learn more about being a taxidermist as I do each and every deer mount. Ken is very particular about his work, so he trains you to do your best! If I set one set of eyes I set 100. J/k —— It is a lot to take in, in just 5 days but you need every bit of what he is training you so don’t try and cut yourself short. You will be thankful at the end of your training you had one of the very best instructors teaching you. Guarantee that! When you leave the training and get home and find yourself doubting your work or asking yourself what needs to be done to this mount to make it look better or look right— guess what? Ken is always there to help you, shoot him a text or give him a call he is always very helpful and I myself appreciate that. Brain and I look forward to coming back and taking another course in the near future!
I sent this past week with Ken doing a 5 day intermediate whitetail coarse. I had a great time as soon as you walk in the door you feel at home. Being a deer taxidermist already i just wasnt satisfied with my work. Ken has great knowlage for taxidermy and an exceptional teacher. Using his system I fixed every problem I had.

Our Basic Whitetail Course is by far the most popular course we offer. Day 2 is a comprehensive study of eye anatomy with several hours of hands-on sculpting, employing very simple methods developed to help you get a consistent live look. You will gain a better understanding of how to interpret what you see in two and three dimensional reference and apply it to your subject, which is a fundamental skill you will need to progress in Taxidermy.

The methods employed in modern taxidermy are fairly simple but there are a number of principles that often get overlooked. Anyone can learn to mount a deer, bobcat or a duck. It is a process…a series of steps using certain methods that result in a representation of an animal. It does not require any real skills to do that. It may look really bad in the beginning and for some it make look even worse later on, but with a little perseverance and a lot of patience and practice pretty much anyone could work their way into the ranks of average. There are a lot of old timers out there in the industry that would not want to hear that but it is true. Still, average is as far as most of us go because average is the acceptable standard, which means for taxidermists the least amount of effort with the highest possible payoff. In most cases, consumers see exceptional work that we would consider average and so that version of average is what they expect. It’s a good thing too because for the industry, anything beyond the idea of average can be frightening. If consumer expectations are higher than your capability it can and likely will affect your livelihood. If consumer expectations were a little higher and a little bit closer to a live-animal standard, the industry would most certainly be much smaller. The truth is, no one seems to know what-right-looks-like or how that translates over to commercial taxidermy. There are, of course, a minority of taxidermists that strive to be above average and focus much of their efforts in realism. Few can pull it off accurately. None can pull it off perfectly but it is that pursuit that can ultimately make ones work exceptional. Technique is a factor but I personally believe that the number one dividing line between average and exceptional is simple principle…basic fundamental principles, like the educated and disciplined use of references, the proper preparation, fit and taxiing of skins, form selection and preparation and the dreaded second and third day workovers. If you are a taxidermist then you may not even think about some of these things but you probably know exactly where you are on the spectrum of capability. Are you average or are you exceptional? Are you happy with that or do you want a change? If you don’t know, you might consider finding out before your customers do…before they see what-is-possible somewhere else. Focus on principles first and your work will improve immediately. If you need help finding the answers there are many resources available to you from your State Associations, Schools and Workshops and of course the internet gives us an endless sea of direct information on YouTube, Facebook and the Search Engines. If you have any questions or need more specific direction feel free to call us at Taxidermy Tech. You never know...we might have an answer!

[06/02/21]   Payment Plans

The information sheet we send out explains our basic concept, cost, payment options etc. This is the first thing we send out when you first contact us. It is also a download on the home page of our website. Through this alone there should never be any question as to what it costs to attend one of our courses or what the payment option requires. The proposal we send out with the invoice essentially formalizes the same information contained in the Information sheet but will also include your specific dates of training, payment amount, payment due dates and any additional options that you have selected. The invoice itself shows total, payment amounts and payment dates. It is distributed via email and it is what you use to pay and/or follow your payment plan.

We book some folks months out and many have been booked as far out as a year. In the past we required no deposit to secure an open slot until your first payment due date at 60 days out. This was a risk for us but we did it that way for 7 years with very few issues. When you agree to a set of dates and the terms contained in the information sheet and the proposal you are telling us that you will make your payments as indicated. So you could select a set of dates up to a year out with no deposit requirement…but, at 60 days we do require a commitment and under the terms of the payment plan it is 25% of the total. If something happens along the way and you cannot fulfill the terms in the information sheet and the proposal, it is your responsibility to tell us as soon as possible. These things happen and it is not a big deal as long as you communicate with us but the bigger issue is that there are others who might possibly be able to take your slot and it is extremely time sensitive… the longer you hang on to an unsecured slot inside the 60 day confirmation window the more risk we assume and the more difficult it is for someone else to get in. People have to plan time off of work or school, get approvals for vacation time and prepare themselves financially for the trip. So for most, a 60 day lead is the absolute minimum amount of time they need. You can always be rescheduled to a time that best fits your needs and capabilities, but if you are intent on coming to your assigned dates, your payments must be on time…especially the first one.

Unfortunately we do not have much in the way of an official grace period to offer on the first payment but we will usually work with 3 to 5 days under certain circumstances if requested. The bottom line is this…we expect the student to have an investment that is proportional to the risk that we are assuming and the longer that a slot stays unsecure the bigger our risk. If we do not hear from a student that is scheduled on an unsecured slot within 5 days after reaching the 60 day window, we will have no choice but to rescind that slot and release those dates for another student. This rarely happens but I just want to be sure that everyone understands that we extend a payment plan as a courtesy and it has terms. Communication can get us over a lot of obstacles but if communication goes silent when the commitment begins, we have no option but to rescind. Time is an extremely rare and valuable commodity here and it is our responsibility to manage it effectively.
Incidentally, our policy has been changed to require a $100 deposit if you are outside the 60 day window and is beginning to be applied to newer bookings that will be carried out later in the year.

Congratulations to Brayden Marchand on completion of his Basic Whitetail Course! I do not usually accept anyone under 18 into our program and in the rare cases that I have made an exception (16 years old) it has only been after extensive discussion with the parents and careful consideration. Brayden is the youngest student I have had...he is 14. He was accompanied and assisted by his Dad and his cousin this week. This is not something that is particularly easy for anyone and especially a 14 year old...the attention span of young teenagers is usually not sufficiently developed for something like this. Mom had assured me that Brayden was ahead of his years and this was something he was already doing on his own. I accepted him and I would have to admit that she was right. Like anyone else there were areas where he struggled a little and he knows where he needs to focus his effort when he gets back home...but he held in there as well as any 20, 30 or 40 year old and did a fantastic job on both mounts. I suspect that if he maintains his passion for taxidermy he will go far and do great things! Congratulations Brayden!

Learning Taxidermy

Are you considering taxidermy as a career field, part time job opportunity or hobby? Starting a new business venture is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make right up there with starting a family, buying a home or changing career fields. There are advantages and disadvantages in any business venture and the one you are considering now is no exception. You will need to strike a balance of sound business practices and basic technical skills to have any chance at long lasting success. A business plan can set you on the right path and a mentor from just about any service based business or even an accountant can help you to understand the business end of your new venture. There are even more ways that you can learn the basic technical skills you will need to be competitive as a commercial taxidermist.

Learn from another taxidermist

There was a time when commercial taxidermists would quickly close the door to newcomers and with virtually no direction in learning their craft, the painful symptoms of trial and error often ended the professional “lives” of many aspiring taxidermists. Today, through organized associations of taxidermists, professionals and hobbyist alike eagerly share ideas and learn from each other. It is still not easy to get your foot in the door at the local taxidermy studio but there are a lot more alternatives available now than ever before.
