Empowerment through Yoga

Yoga is a philosophy; a way of living our lives and accepting ourselves and our inner light, rather than being flexible or perfecting a pose. Trauma-Sensitive principles are relevant to other forms of movement as well; the same principles can be applied in many venues as long as we are present.
For example, we can stand on an elliptical machine, bringing our awareness to feeling our feet on the ground, or in this case on the pedals. We can pay attention to the parts of our bodies that are making contact with the ground. We can feel supported by the earth underneath our feet and feel the unspoken support of those around us.
As we explore our bodies in our space and experiment by increasing our pace and pressing the handlebars away from us, we can pay attention to the right and left movement of our arms and legs; paying attention to the expansion and contraction of our belly muscles as we breathe. We begin to feel on a visceral body level, the strength in our core.
Gently lifting our heart adds a lightness to our being, an effortless action, as we breathe with our entire body. Shaking out our arms and legs is important, since most hyperarousal is in our arms and legs.
Dancing is an amazing form for relaxing into our space of personal power and making it our own, while taking effective action and allowing our creative possibilities to flow.
The key is in joyful movement itself. By leaning into spaces that scare us and relaxing into our own safe space and then choosing to move in a way that is right for us, we free ourselves from non-relevant energy of the past.
We see clearly how thoughts and feelings are constantly changing. As we begin to let go of the illusion of control, we learn to relax into the unknown and trust the journey itself.
