"When you were young, growing up in a diverse school and when you were ultimately standing out, you don’t really realize the concept of race. But in middle school, when you start to understand all the social constructs and when bullying is huge, that’s when you realize that there are different things that are coming through the minds of students with different racial backgrounds."

"As someone who grew up in China, I was not aware of the concept of race at all as I was always surrounded by people of the same descent. The first time I noticed someone who looked different than me was when I started watching NBA, and that’s when I realized 'oh there are people who are in a different skin color than mine'. It wasn’t until I came to the U.S. for college and started interacting with people who’re from a mixed of racial backgrounds had I started to formalize the concept of race."

"I think for me it's not so much race that I realized but rather the diversity among different races. Growing up in Houston, it’s one of the most diverse places in the country. We have street signs that are in five different languages, and you run into all sorts of walks of life."

Books or media with content related to race can let us become aware of the concept of race, but it can still be difficult for people to understand it if the environment they live in is lacking both racial and ethic diversity.
