Good evening, Ward 12! A quick reminder for the TOWNSHIP MEETING TONIGHT for residents on Fortune/Crescent and Menlo/Woodlyn:
*******NEW STOP SIGNS- DID YOU KNOW?********
GLENSIDE GARDENS: Motion to authorize NEW STOP SIGN at Fortune and Crescent Intersection. Speed detection mounted at 559 Crescent Ave from Apr 19-22 had recorded just 40 vehicles during that period. The average speed was 21mph. Right To Know request provided no additional information such as sight distance issues or accidents that would warrant a STOP sign. APD recommended leaving out a speed cart, which is something that residents and drivers can clearly view speed on. Do YOU think a STOP sign is necessary for 21mph on a very low traffic street? PennDOT states that unwarranted use of STOP signs are dangerous and should NEVER be used to slow speed, studies prove it does the opposite with drivers speeding up between signs. Do you agree with PennDOT? Please make sure your voice is heard tonight.
WOODLYN AND MENLO RESIDENTS: Tonight there is a motion to approve a STOP sign on Woodlyn. A neighbor was concerned about motorists blowing the STOP sign on Menlo, the sign was damaged, had fallen down with low visibility, and this intersection is also a bus stop for the children. APD promptly acted and had the STOP sign fixed. After 11 days and multiple attempts at contact from APD, the commissioner responded and he wants to add ANOTHER STOP sign on Woodlyn. How does a STOP sign on Woodlyn prevent drivers from blowing the sign at Menlo? This intersection has a lot of signs (do not enter, one way during certain times, stop) and can be confusing for motorists. We want our neighbors, especially the children, safe! Do YOU agree with adding another STOP sign on Woodlyn to fix the issue? What about utilizing an bright LED STOP sign for greater visibility, painting curbs yellow in front of the stop sign so cars dont block the intersection, and enforcement? PennDOT says multiway stops are DANGEROUS when traffic rarely comes to a full stop at the STOP sign, they say motorists increase their speed between stop signs to make up for lost time and residents may gain a false sense of security. Please make sure your voice is heard tonight.
If you are interested in learning more from PennDOT about ways to reduce speed in neighborhoods, please reach out! Stop signs have been popping up all over the township, some residents believe STOP signs mean slower speeds and that is not true. PennDOT stresses that the misuse of STOP signs is DANGEROUS. There ARE great alternatives such as LED Radar speed signs, solar LED flashing or lit STOP signs, increasing enforcement, increasing visibility of the current traffic signs, etc. Safety should always be #1 priority and together we can make our streets safer by following the guidance of the engineers and professionals at PennDOT.
