This is one of my favorite exercises to teach horses how to respond to leg and rein pressure before getting on their back. I like to teach as much as you can on the ground before climbing into the saddle, this makes the process a lot easier for them and me.
I first start by bumping the stirrup on their side(like my leg) and asking them to move forward. I use a little rein to keep their head bent and soft while walking a circle. I then take the "leg pressure" off and bend their head all the way to the girth until she comes to a stop. This is the start of a "one rein stop" which I will be using on our first couple rides. After she stops I then move my hand back closer to her flank and add pressure to move her hip. I keep her head bent so to help her learn not to move her front feet but instead pivot around them with her hind end. When I take my hand off her side that is her cue to stop.
This is a great way to help horses understand how to be soft, responsive, and light off of your cues and move their body in different way off of feel.
Star did great!

Everyone welcome Mary! She is going to be joining our growing lesson program after she goes though a couple weeks of training to make sure she is quiet and safe for out students.

Star is coming along nicely! We have been working on basic lunging, backing off on pressure, moving hindquarters and shoulders, giving to pressure through the halter as well as the bridle, and being a calm, focused, responsive and respectful citizen! This is a short clip of our lunging session from today.

Everyone meet Star.
She is going to be here for a couple of months to get a solid foundation on her and turn her into a nice quiet trail horse. She had her first session today and did very well! Stay tuned for training videos and updates!

GB Equestrian is now taking in training horses at our facility in Macclesfield NC!

What I do:
Do you have a horse who needs to be tuned up after having time off? Or maybe you have a green horse that needs to be brought to the next level? Or a baby that needs to be started? Or even an older horse who’s never been ridden? Trail riding miles? Foundation work? Behavior issues? If so, feel free to give me a call! I specialize is foundation training and problem solving. I focus on building a solid relationship with each horse and using that relationship to fix issues, teach new behavior and achieve goals.

How I train:
I don't focus on a specific discipline, but a specific level of willingness, softness, and confidence. We all know that riding is a team sport whether you compete in english or western, trail ride, or just mess around in the ring. We all want and need a horse that understands us and willingly and respectfully does what we ask and goes where we want. So, if you can get that level of understanding with your horse then you will be much more likely to excel in whatever style of riding you choose. I focus just as much on a horses mental strength as I do their physical strength. Training always should begin on the ground, that is where the communication and relationship begins. Odds are if you have a bad relationship on the ground climbing onto your horses back isn’t going to go as well as it could or should. Foundation is everything! I always make sure my horses are prepared before moving to the next step, I want them calm, confident, responsive, and respectful. When you take the time it takes, it takes less time.

What to expect:
Horses that are in training with me will go through extensive ground and under saddle work both on the trail and in the ring, they will learn to ride alone as well as in a group and do it all calmly and respectfully. I focus a lot on “loosening” their whole body and teaching them to be responsive to all cues as well as loosening their “brain” and getting them engaged in what you are asking.

Cost:
Problem solving/Colt Starting: $600 a month

Tune ups/restart: $500 a month

Owner supplies, hay, grain and sawdust. Price includes stall and field and free lessons once a week, although I encourage owners to come and watch me work as much as possible. I believe that owners should be involved in as much of the training process as the horse. After all, you are the one working with the horse once they go home!

Let me know if you would be interested in sending your horse to me for training or taking lessons on either my horse or your own! I have tons of references!

Trailering available for extra fee.

I am selling rope halters again! Can be completely customized to fit your oddly shaped horse! Right now these are the colors I have available but will have more soon.
I have been training horses with these halters for 8+ years and they have yet to fail me! I designed them with strategically placed knots to fit the horse in a way that makes them strong, effective, and comfortable.
I can also make you training lead lines to match the halters. They come with snaps and a weighted end with leather popper for doing ground work.

I have a few horse sized halters pre-made in stock and I am asking 15 each.

$16 custom, pick up
$19 custom, shipped
Bulk discount if you buy 4 or more.
