🏡 Safe Ways Cancer Survivors Can Exercise at Home

Staying active during or after cancer treatment can help improve strength, reduce fatigue, and boost overall well-being. Regular physical activity may also improve quality of life and reduce treatment side effects.

Here are 5 safe tips to get moving at home:

1️⃣ Start Slow
Begin with 5–10 minutes of light movement like walking in place or gentle stretching. Gradually increase your time and intensity.

2️⃣ Warm Up First
Spend 5 minutes warming up with arm circles, marching in place, or shoulder rolls to prepare your body.

3️⃣ Focus on Gentle Strength
Bodyweight exercises like squats, wall push-ups, and resistance band rows help rebuild muscle safely.

4️⃣ Listen to Your Body
If you feel pain, dizziness, or extreme fatigue, stop and rest. Always adapt exercises to your energy level.

5️⃣ Stay Consistent
Short sessions throughout the day can still provide major benefits. Even small amounts of movement add up.

✨ Remember: Always check with your healthcare team before starting a new exercise routine.

💪 Exercise After Blood Cancer: Why Movement Matters

Recovery is a journey, and safe, consistent movement can be a powerful part of healing. For blood cancer survivors, exercise can support both physical and emotional recovery.

✨ Here are a few reasons to keep moving:

• Boosts energy levels – Regular activity can help reduce cancer-related fatigue.
• Rebuilds strength – Light resistance or bodyweight exercises help restore muscle lost during treatment.
• Supports immune health – Moderate exercise may improve immune system function.
• Improves mood & mental health – Movement releases endorphins and reduces stress.
• Enhances quality of life – Staying active helps you regain independence and confidence.

🚶‍♂️ Start small: walking, gentle yoga, or resistance bands can make a big difference. Always check with your healthcare team before beginning a new exercise program.

Your body has been through a lot — movement is one way to celebrate its strength. 💙

Cancer survivorship is a journey of resilience, strength, and rediscovery. While treatment may be over, healing and rebuilding continue—and one of the most powerful tools survivors have is exercise.

Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and hormone therapy can leave lasting effects: fatigue, muscle loss, reduced bone density, weight changes, anxiety, and decreased cardiovascular health.

Regular physical activity plays a crucial role in restoring and protecting overall well-being.

It’s never too late to begin your journey.

Speaking of, on, and about...

I’ve has been living with an incurable chronic form of leukemia since 2006. And while I’ve been successful in keeping my disease in remission, it’s taken 54 rounds of chemotherapy, countless rounds of steroid therapy, a commitment to physical exercise and a positive attitude to keep me in a good place. I’ve also been an endurance sports ju**ie since the mid 1980s and have found very meaningful ways of connecting those two aspects of my life including coaching and mentoring other patients and their families.

I’ve managed to navigate the murky waters that accompany a cancer diagnosis and I share some of the victories and challenges I’ve met along the way in my talks. I also share the impacts my cancer has had on my personal and professional life. The mindset needed to keep my leukemia in check is not much different than the formula for happiness and success in life.

In 2018 our family roles reversed as I became the primary caregiver for my wife who underwent multiple surgeries to repair five brain aneurysms. Perspective changed. With a wife of 33 years, two daughters, and four grandchildren, I like to believe I’m setting a positive example and being the best person and role model I can be.

As a patient, survivor, caregiver, mentor, coach, author, endurance athlete, husband, father, grandfather, and former college and semi professional soccer player, I’ve learned lessons, and I’ve got stories to tell. Speaking engagements are tailored to your specific organizational needs. Talks can pull from a variety of personal experiences relating to motivation, endurance sports racing and training, overcoming challenges, facing adversity, the importance of giving back, key life lessons learned and personal leukemia diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.
