Our new flock has assimilated very nicely and everyone is laying at full production!! We have lots of eggs!! We are available for pick up, delivery, and we even have a pickup location in lower Bucks County, PA. And for a limited time, we have Fairy Eggs available! Our new layers are doing great, but since they are still young pullets, their eggs are very small and super cute! Just the size of quail eggs! We are selling these novelty half dozens for $1.50. Our regular sized, rainbow dozens are $4 each. Feed your family with love. At A Little Jersey Homestead, we believe you should . Our hens free range on 8 acres and are fed an all natural diet, supplemented by foraging and extras from our own garden. Call, email, or message us for details!!

If a tree falls in the woods... Fingers crossed it doesn't crush your house. π π³

This past week has been really taxing. We've had lots of unpredictable weather, high heat, and so much rain. During one of last week's storms, a microburst came through with whipping winds and driving rain. It came on so fast and so quick that it snapped one of our old hickories right in half. We were very lucky that the damage to our house was minimal and nothing serious. We can fix a stove pipe. We can fix a gutter, add shingles.. Thankfully this tree didn't fall just 5 or 10 feet in another direction - it could have crushed half the house. Where we didn't get so lucky, was the garden.. This tree destroyed half the garden and brought down limbs from other trees that did more damage on the back half of the garden. We are still working on cleaning and cutting up the tree. What makes it more difficult is that we have discovered ground bees near the cleanup site, and .frank.374 found out first hand.. So.. It's been very trying. We are just trying to stay positive and be thankful that something truly terrible did not happen. While our first year into homesteading certainly hasn't been easy, we hope that we can look back on this and laugh π

Bloom where you're planted πΉ

This past week and weekend were full of lessons for us on the homestead. Particularly in our garden...
Β·
Β·
One word: bugs. Living out in the woods, there is an unimaginable amount of insects that call our property home.. And man.. Did some of these little buggers do some big damage to our veggies!! Our brassicas got all munched up, our potato plants looked like they were peppered with buckshot, and our beans are being chewed up as well.. Cabbage moths and flea beetles...We hate you. So we'll try again this fall, but with Ag-cloth in place to protect them.
Β·
Β·
Sunshine isn't always your friend.. At least not when it comes to cauliflower! We didn't know that our cauliflower would turn purple when exposed to too much sun.. Even though the coloring is a water-soluble, non-toxic pigment, it does give cauliflower a bit of an off taste. Using their own leaves to cover the emerging heads, will keep their heads nice and white.
Β·
Β·
Even with partially sandy soil, an abundance of rain will rot your potatoes. In addition to the flea beetles, we feel like all the rain we've been receiving did a number on our tubers. Well.. The number of consistently cloudy days combined with all the rain really kept the soil from drying properly. We're going to mix in some drainage medium before replanting our next round of potatoes and make very sure that the cuttings of seed potato are properly calloused before planting.
Β·
Β·
With all the rain and humidity, we're going to start a regular regimine of a natural solution to prevent mold and mildew.
Sooo here's to a second round of planting with more experience under our belts and a new plan of action!! This week, we are determine to bloom where we're planted and shape our land to suit our needs!

We're baaaack!! So it's been a few months since we've posted anything on Instagram, thank you to those who are still following. The last few months have brought some challenging times and taxing situations.. Yet, they've also brought some big, positive changes; like a new job, combining both our large and small chicken flocks, clearing more land, and a garden ready for a harvest! Hang with us this week to see our successes and learning experiences with our garden πΏπ±
