Thank you all for your interest in Soft Boiled, Philly's new mixed ultimate team!

Below you will find important info about our tryout dates and process and answers to FAQs from our interest form.

First, a reminder of our team goals, in no particular order:

1) To build a fun, supportive, committed team that enjoys spending time together both on and off the field;
2) To create a team that prioritizes gender equity by being intentional about who has power and voice in games, on the sidelines, and in leadership, and to bring that energy to our other ultimate communities;
3) To grow as players and as a team from preseason, to tryouts, to regular season, and through postseason. Our goal is to play together as long as we can without compromising on our team's other goals of fun, growth, and equity. We would be sad not to make regionals, as that would mean fewer weeks playing together.

TRYOUTS

During the tryout process, we want you to showcase your strengths as both an ultimate player and a teammate. We also want to see how well you can pick up and adapt to new offensive and defensive systems. The deeper we move into tryouts, the more it will feel like a Soft Boiled practice.

We will be making cuts on a rolling basis through June 8th. If you are unable to make either of the open tryouts and would still like to tryout for our team, please reach out to [email protected] and tell us a little bit more about your situation. If we think that you sound like a good match for the team, we will invite you to one of our early season practices for a tryout.

ANSWERS TO FAQs

Where does the name Soft Boiled come from/what does it mean?
We love ultimate, and we are serious about it, but we recognize that it is also absurd. We put hours and hours of our lives into getting good at it, we plan vacations and work around it, we spend money on it, and last week Annie and Dan were throwing in a park and a mom told her kid, "you think watching this is exciting, wait until you see it with a dog!" One option is to be upset about comments like that. The other is to embrace how goofy our obsession is. We want this team to be competitive and disciplined, to grow throughout the year, to work hard, but we also want to have fun, to make new friends, to learn to trust and value one another. Don't overthink it. It's all a little half-baked, a little soft boiled. The delicate balance between keeping it loose and keeping it structured, like that jammy, perfect 7 minute egg. Is that crazy? Of course.

Some other perks: egg puns - some of the cheers you all suggested are amazing; and we get to rebrand the word soft, e.g. "that was so soft!" after a sick bid.

Can't wait for the new meanings the name will take on as we hang out together during the season!

I won't be around for tryouts because I am moving to Philly later in the summer, or because I am in college, etc. Can I still play with you all?

This will be decided on a case-by-case basis. We hope to have a roster of around 20-24 by the second week of June. We are open to evaluating late arrivers to the city and adding them to the roster if they seem like a good fit for the team! Send us an email if this applies to you (even if you already put it in the interest form) so that we can be in touch throughout the early season.

Lastly, attached is an image with a predicted budget for the season

If you made it to the end of this email, props. We can't wait to meet you all!

Love,

Soft Boiled Leadership

A little about the team:
The goals for the team this year, in no particular order, are:
1) To build a fun, supportive, committed team that enjoys spending time together both on and off the field;
2) To create a team that prioritizes gender equity by being intentional about who has power and voice in games, on the sidelines, and in leadership, and to bring that energy to our other ultimate communities;
3) To grow as players and as a team from preseason, to tryouts, to regular season, and through postseason. Our goal is to play together as long as we can without compromising on our team's other goals of fun, growth, and equity. We would be sad not to make regionals, as that would mean fewer weeks playing together.

A little about us:
We're coming from a broad range of club-level experience. Matt has played for D.C. Truck Stop and Medicine Men, Scott and Kat have played with Distelfink in Lancaster, Annie played with Sabotage last year, and Stokes hasn't played club since college, when he played on a now defunct club team called Swell. Before Philadelphia, Stokes and Matt played in college together at Georgetown, and Annie is 1.5 years out from playing at Whitman.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, please click the link that says "sign up" on the right hand side of this page. The intrest form will let us know a little more about you and allow us to keep you in the loop as we plan fun preseason things, try-outs, and the season ahead.
