The finishing brush isn't just a vanity step for shine; it is the final act of metabolic recovery.

Post-exercise, your horse’s system works hard to process metabolic waste. While deep grooming lifts debris, the finishing stage is where we address the skin interface and the lymphatic system.

Observation: Lymphatic vessels sit just beneath the skin. Unlike the heart, the lymphatic system has no pump; it relies on external pressure to flow.

Expert Translation: By using finishing brushes in a sequence following the lymphatic map: working towards the heart and major nodes: you assist venous return. This aids tissue recovery and regulates the nervous system. The glow you see is simply the outward sign of a regulated internal system.

If you aren't grooming with the lymphatic map in mind, you are missing a vital recovery window.

Master this science in ‘The Regulated Horse’ ebook. DM ‘RECOVERY’ for the link or save this for your next post-ride session.

11 year old TB mare, below is what her owner sent me. Please no comments about side reins, I try to keep this page free from judgement, we’re all on our own learning journey. I had a similar experience at 18 when a TB flipped over and was dead in 2 minutes. The side reins loose probably weren’t the problem, the sursingle would have been on the rib fractures. These fractures look old judging by the amount of ossification.

“A very sad, albeit very important learning experience yesterday! Back in July, before I went away to Europe, I purchased a very sweet thoroughbred mare as a project. This mare hadn’t been touched in two years and the plan was to slowly bring her into work, school her up and then sell her on. However it became apparent yesterday that this was absolutely not going to be a possibility due to this mare’s incredibly extreme and downright dangerous behaviour.

Yesterday was the second time I lunged her and the first time I introduced a set of very loosely fitted side reins. This plan was very quickly scrapped as she began full height, vertically rearing and broncing in a way that I have never seen a horse do before. No matter what I did, or what I did to try and help her, she just could not find her way to go forward. This all culminated in her vertically rearing and flipping backwards out of my arena!

At this point the side reins were off, and I didn’t want to leave this poor mare traumatised than what she already was, so I was going to finish there and come up with a game plan for her. However when I asked her to walk forward just on the lead, she began full height rearing again before one final, full height, vertical rear where she then launched herself backwards. I had never seen anything like it! It was such a horrifically extreme reaction, that I have never seen before in a horse. I was in absolute shock and struggled to process what I had just seen”

This is half of the video, the other half is on my patreon page explaining in more detail. Supporting my work means I can continue to show people the hidden damage in horses they are often trying to communicate through behaviour.

Dr. Pat developed a love and passion for horses as a youth in 4-H. It was there that she learned to judge conformation and movement in horses but also paid attention to how people walked and carried themselves. This led to her interest in chiropractic as a career. She received her post-graduate Doctor of Chiropractic in 1987 and has been a member of Broad Axe Chiropractic Center since graduation. But she never lost interest in equine biomechanics, which led her to earn her certification from the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association in 1994.

She understands the strong bond that people have with their animals and her approach is to have both humans and animals optimize their health for more rewarding interactions in work and play. .
