We talk a lot about being triggered.
During my conversation with Amanda Hill of Connections of Hope Counseling Center , I shared a reframe I use often, and it changed the way she saw her own nervous system in real time.
Swipe through for the shift I keep coming back to.

I’ve been thinking about something since my conversation with Amanda Hill.
Being able to do something yourself doesn’t necessarily mean you have to.
Amanda spent years being the person who figured things out. And when life became incredibly difficult, that independence helped her survive.
But eventually she had an experience that offered something different:
She needed someone—and they showed up.
It didn’t immediately change the way she saw herself. But over time, it became new evidence about what it could mean to depend on another person.
I think that’s an important distinction.
Healing doesn’t always mean getting rid of the strategies that helped us survive.
Sometimes it means discovering that we have more choices now.

My guest this week spent years believing that needing help meant she had failed.
Amanda Hill was a newly divorced mom raising two little kids on her own. From the outside, everyone thought she had it together. On the inside, she was barely staying afloat.
She told me it took her a long time to call her dad when she couldn’t pay her mortgage. And when she finally did, he showed up for her without judgment.
Looking back now, she sees it differently. Asking for help was never proof that she was failing. It was proof of how strong she really was.
If you’re the person everyone counts on, the one who never lets anyone see you struggle, this episode is for you.

NEW EPISODE 🎙️
There was a time in Amanda Hill’s life when she was a newly single mom with two very young children, struggling financially and trying to hold everything together.
From the outside, people thought she was doing fine.
And Amanda was very good at letting them think that.
She describes herself as hyper-independent. Asking for help felt almost impossible, even when she truly needed it.
Until she finally did.
In this episode, Amanda and I talk about that experience and what it taught her about receiving support, connection and unconditional love.
We also get into faith, hope, parenting, trauma, the nervous system, why positive thinking isn’t always enough, and how our past experiences can shape what we expect to happen next.
And we talk about the story behind the name of the counseling practice Amanda eventually created: **Connections of Hope.**

If you're a therapist, social worker, coach, nurse, healer, or other helping professional, you probably spend a lot of your day paying attention to everyone else.
Listening.
Attuning.
Noticing what's happening beneath the words.
Holding space for pain, uncertainty, grief, fear, and change.
But how often do you have a practice that asks you to turn that same quality of attention toward yourself?
That's one of the reasons I believe Reiki can be such a meaningful practice for helping professionals.
Not because you need another tool to use with your clients.
But because **you are part of the work.**
Your presence matters.
Your ability to stay grounded matters.
Your capacity to notice what's happening inside you while remaining connected to another person matters.
Reiki gives us a practice for tending to the instrument through which we do this work: ourselves.
In our upcoming **Reiki 1 & 2 training for mental health and helping professionals**, we'll explore Reiki as a personal practice for presence, self-awareness, nervous system regulation, and reconnecting with yourself—not simply as something you learn to "do" to someone else.
And we won't rush through an attunement and send you on your way.
We'll learn and practice together over several weeks, with time for integration, reflection, questions, and actually developing a Reiki practice that fits into your life and your work.
Whether you're completely new to Reiki or you've been attuned before but never really developed a personal practice, you're welcome.
**Before Reiki becomes something you offer, let it become something you practice.**
Registration is open for Reiki 1 & 2 for mental health and helping professionals.

“I can do it myself.”
For some of us, that’s more than independence.
It’s how we learned to survive.
We figure it out. We keep going. We become the capable one - the person everyone assumes is fine.
But what happens when we actually need someone?
Tomorrow on **The Spiritually Curious Therapist**, I’m talking with therapist, author, and Connections of Hope founder **Amanda Hill** about hyper-independence, asking for help, faith, hope, the nervous system, and what can happen when we finally allow someone else to show up for us.

You may have heard of Reiki as something you receive.
You lie on a table. Someone places their hands gently on or above you. Maybe you feel relaxed. Maybe you feel warmth or tingling. Maybe you don’t feel much of anything.
But here’s the part of Reiki that I think a lot of people don’t know:
Reiki is also a practice you can learn for yourself.
You don’t need to be a therapist.
You don’t need to want to become a Reiki practitioner.
You don’t need to consider yourself particularly spiritual.
And you definitely don’t need to have some special ability.
Reiki 1 begins with learning simple practices you can return to in your own life using your breath, attention, hands, and the traditional Reiki practices and Precepts as ways of slowing down, listening and reconnecting with yourself.
That’s the part of Reiki I’m most interested in these days.
In a world that gives us a thousand ways to distract ourselves from ourselves, I love having a practice that asks me to come back.
That’s what we’ll be exploring in our upcoming Reiki 1 & 2 training this fall.
