The Rose that Grew in the Concrete Jungle.

Ten years ago, Derrick Rose wore No. 25 and Carmelo Anthony wore No. 7 for a New York Knicks team still chasing a title the city hadn’t lifted since 1973. Tomorrow, that banner finally rises over The Garden.

Two rookies, one magical season.

Evan Longoria debuted in April 2008 and went on to win AL Rookie of the Year. David Price debuted five months later and closed out Game 7 of the ALCS in relief. Together, they helped send the Rays to their first-ever World Series that October.

Price would go on to win the franchise’s first AL Cy Young Award in 2012.

50 years ago, the NBA merged with the ABA. Four teams survived the deal: the Spurs, Nuggets, Pacers, and Nets, each paying $3.2 million to join, all forfeiting national TV revenue for three years.

Two ABA teams didn’t survive it. When the Kentucky Colonels folded, their biggest star, Artis Gilmore, entered a dispersal draft, and the Chicago Bulls, picking first, took him for $1.1 million.

George “The Iceman” Gervin averaged 27.7 points that season for the Spurs. David Thompson averaged 27.2 for the Nuggets. Together with Billy Knight in Indiana and Nate Archibald in New Jersey, they carried the ABA’s style directly into the league.

No. 52, Retired Forever.

On September 26, the Yankees retired CC Sabathia’s No. 52 and dedicated his plaque in Monument Park, the 24th number in franchise history and the first since Paul O’Neill in 2022.

Sabathia arrived in 2009 on the largest contract ever given to a free-agent pitcher, then delivered immediately: 19-8, an ALCS MVP, and the Yankees 27th World Series championship in his first season. He retired with 3,093 strikeouts, third all-time among left-handers, and entered the Hall of Fame in 2025 wearing a Yankees cap.
