December 8-9, off to a late start for the season but a fun start nonetheless. My first day experiencing the services from the new owners and crew of Sonora Wings. An outstanding team of professionals that I believe will be instrumental in the effort to promote and grow our sport in Arizona.

Sunday at Merriam Crater. I have never seen so much haze at the craters. No doubt from all those California fires. North wind all day, great launch conditions. 3 PGs, Tony, Mike Alvey and myself flying hang gliders. Gains above launch were anywhere from none to 1,500 in moderate to rowdy therms. Since we did not have a driver, we rode up in my truck and left recovery vehicles in multiple LZs. Steve (PG pilot) landed nearest a vehicle and oversaw recovery. Many thanks Steve. With the east LZ closed, the PGs landed in the upper parking area and we hangies landed in a new NW LZ near the base. I know I have had crazier landing air, I just can't remember when. Challenging air producing quite the workout but everyone safely on the ground with grins and no pounded landings. After a great BBQ dinner, we were south bound with new memories.

Last Tandems of 2017 01/01/2018

I had the great pleasure of doing my last tandem flights of 2017 with a delightful pair of sisters from Singapore. Eagle Sister and Chicken Sister. Titles provided me by the younger, (Eagle Sister of course). When I commented on what seemed to be a passive aggressive relationship between the two, they assured me that there was nothing passive about their relationship.

What a great training weekend at the craters. I was concerned after all of the rains that the roads might be impassable. A couple of rough spots but still doable. Steve and Matt, aka "The Flying Turtle and Bug Boy," (okay, you had to be there), did great work on their first, post-tandem, foot-launched flights. They listened to their radios well, learned a lot and above all, had fun. For you soaring pilots, Friday, north Merriam glass was nice but otherwise, the conditions were best for these newbies and you did not miss much.

After running one last foot launch ground school at the hangar in anticipation of heading for the craters, it was time to pack up the tug, tandem glider and all the other aerotow paraphernalia for the summer. But Tony just had to have that one last solo flight before ending the aerotow season and it was booming by 10 am. A pretty good workout for both of us and a great way to close the season. Time now to work those craters and see how soon we can prep the boys for Mingus.

Introducing the most recent "survivors" of a Sky Masters foot launch ground school, Matt and Reed. Reed received his aerotow tandem flight training from Bill Bennett of Sonora Wings and Matt from Bill Holmes of Sky Masters. These two newbies showed exemplary training progression with each run and gave no less than 100% in their efforts. I am confident that they will excel at the Craters.

The flying tours are over, all the gliders are sold. It's been a great three seasons and I'm on to other things. Thank you to all the pilots that joined me this year!

I had the great pleasure of performing my last tandem flights of 2016 with the adventuresome mother/daughter team of Kim and Brienne. While the shouts and squeals made me push the envelope, I could not rattle this daring duo even with my most aggressive maneuvers. Glad you enjoyed it ladies, thanks for sharing the sky with me and Happy New Year.

09/19/2016

The forecast was good so I found it surprising that Ole and I were the only 2 that showed up on Mingus. Even more surprising/disappointing was to have Ole launch and go up while myself, launching within 5 minutes of him, had a sledder. I launched, immediately flew to the north point that is always so good to me, accomplished a 270 in a small, light bubble, made a few fruitless passes of the face then continued my sledder to Cottonwood Airport, hitting not a single bump for the rest of the flight. Share the secret Ole Wan Cannoli, what was the trick?

The wind was blowing in all morning at Mingus.

Working light, late afternoon thermals coming off of the lava flow on the east side of Merriam crater. Honed my skills for 40+ minutes ranging in altitude from 600 to 1,100 AGL. That light stuff really helps in getting to know the subtleties of your bird.

08/16/2016

Newbie Steven Pistorius, still flying uprights as he had only one short tandem flight before the tow season ended and is building his skills old school style. His confident and aggressive launch technique got him safely off the tops of both Merriam and Sheba this weekend.

A great weekend at the craters with north wind all weekend. Stronger air in the afternoon put a delay on training while giving me a chance to fly.

07/04/2016

Another beautiful day at Mingus July 3rd. Good air, good people. Happy to see Paul Witcomb (on launch) back in the air after his year and a half hiatus.

03/05/2016

After the day's more rowdy and strenuous tandem flights, it's nice to finish with a pleasant and effortless solo flight.

[02/24/16]   A pilot training to aerotow after developing hundreds of hours of mountain flying reflex with J-turn philosophy. Funny thing is, learning the finesse of aerotow actually improves your mountain flying skills.

It may look easy but 6 or 8 of those runs will assuredly leave you gasping and wheezing. But, as the saying goes, "If it does not kill you, it will defintely make you stronger, and a better pilot."
