Installed a new addition to the dojo, today--a water-filled "wrecking ball" bag. Wrecking ball bags allow you to work strikes from all angles, and being water-filled means that it absorbs the shock of your strikes more efficiently, while providing feedback more like the resistance of striking a human body.

Martial arts instructors should seek not only continuing martial education, but also education that helps them better support their students. At the moment, I am going through this course from Queensland University of Technology for that very reason. Although the course is focused on youth and adolescent students, trauma and its effects do not suddenly disappear in adulthood, and learning about it can help us become better as teachers, and as people. It has been a very interesting course, so far, and it is available online for free--I highly encourage anyone who teaches to find this sort of material and study it!

Modern karate is seen as a long-range striking art, but classical karate is a close-range blended art, featuring takedowns, joint locks, strangles, and more. The Okinawans who developed it cross-trained with martial artists from Japan, China, Thailand, Korea, and more. They incorporated striking, grappling, and weapons into their art. They engaged in competitive submission grappling as a pastime. Essentially, karate was a mixed martial art.

When we teach kata (forms), we also teach students how to use the movements, and incorporate those techniques into drills and sparring so that they can actually be used in fighting and self-defense.

Are Karate Drills Bad? 08/09/2021

Are Karate Drills Bad?

Unfortunately, many karate schools teach drills that lack realism, and hold their students back from developing applicable skill, all for the sake of tradition.

Are Karate Drills Bad? Drills are a hallmark of martial arts training, the world over, regardless of art or style, and they come in many different forms, with different intentions. In general, though, how do we define what a "drill" is, and how do we know if they are any good?

Photos from Arizona Practical Karate's post 08/06/2021

We now have a limited supply of APK notebooks available, which feature dot grid pages instead of lined pages, so students can more easily diagram or illustrate their notes for better comprehension! It is easy to think of karate as a physical activity, but there is a lot to learn, and taking notes will help you remember terminology, history, sequences of movements, and details of techniques, drills, and kata.

One of the best things about martial arts is getting to meet and train with new people, learn new things, and make new friends! There is an Okinawan saying, "Ichariba C***e," which roughly means, "Once we meet, we are as family."

Tonight, our chief instructor had the chance to train with Andy Rodriguez Sensei, who teaches a different style of karate on the other side of the country. They found lots of similarities, some interesting differences, and traded knowledge and stories. We encourage our students to seek out such experiences, learn from them, and make friends along the way!

Chibana no Kihongata Renzoku Bunkai Flow Drill 07/19/2021

Chibana no Kihongata Renzoku Bunkai Flow Drill

The first kata (forms) we teach are the three Kihongata created by Chibana Chosin, the founder of (Kobayashi) Shorin-Ryu, and along with the kata, we teach various ways the movements can be used in self-defense. This flow drill is designed to take students through a series of techniques from each of the Kihongata, in order to develop the ability to transition from one techniques to another, and introduces the idea of training to respond to an opponent who reacts to your techniques.

This short chi-ishi complex consists of 3 basic exercises; underhand swings, overhand swings, and inward drop-and-lifts. They not only help strengthen the grip and shoulders, but also aid in developing muscular coordination and breath control, which can then be applied in your karate techniques.

Chi-ishi (power stones, or stone mallets) are a traditional strength training tool in karate, and something we include in our curriculum. The use of these tools is valuable from both an historical perspective and a practical perspective, tying us back to traditional practices connected to our martial art while building strength and reinforcing structure.

Our dojo patch prominently features the kanji (Japanese symbol) for “hand,” which is pronounced “Te” in Japanese, or “Ti” in Uchinaaguchi (the language of Okinawa, where karate comes from). This is one of the names the martial arts of Okinawa were called before the name karate (meaning “empty hand”) was coined, and the word “Ti” in Uchinaaguchi can also mean “skill.” The symbol in our logo has been stylized and done in green to resemble a leaf, representing growth and life. This is contained within a circle, representing the never-ending process of continuous improvement, known as “kaizen” in Japanese. The words “Protect,” “Break Free,” and “Transcend” at the bottom of the circle are the translation of the Japanese phrase, Shu-Ha-Ri, and describes the process a student is meant to go through as they learn a tradition; first, they learn to protect the tradition by copying it exactly as they are shown, then, they break free of the tradition by adding their own personal flair and interpretation, and finally, they transcend the tradition by developing their own.

Okinawa's native folkstyle submission grappling sport--called tegumi or muto, depending on the region--has largely died off, today, except for some small, remote villages. It has been replaced by Shima (aka "Okinawan Sumo"), Sumo, and Judo, but historical accounts make it clear that it was a popular pastime for Okinawan youth, and involved throws, pins, joint locks, and strangles. Grappling is part of the DNA of Okinawan martial arts.

Karate typically uses colored belts to mark students' progression through the curriculum. This is an idea that was taken from Judo, originally, and has grown from simply a white and black belt system, to systems featuring sometimes 10 or more different colored belts before even reaching black belt. Arizona Practical Karate uses a simplified belt system for adults, featuring just 4 colors before black belt--white, yellow, green, and brown--so that students can focus more on training and learning, and less on trying to get a new belt. We also have a completely separate belt system for children, as children have different needs and expectations in their martial arts training, which is a rare practice in karate, although it can certainly be found in Judo, where the belt system comes from, as well as in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
