At this year’s Noche en Blanco, Honorary Chair, Phoenix , invites guests to enjoy the annual toast to the community, which will include a special recognition of former Phoenix Mayor Terry Goddard, and his tremendous leadership in the creation of the park. In regard to the preservation and development of Hance Park, Goddard says, “This remarkable patch of land was supposed to knit the Roosevelt neighborhood together after the I-10 split it asunder. That it did and more. With Burton Barr Central Library , Japanese Friendship Garden, Irish Cultural Center, Second Ward LDS Church (Great Arizona Puppet Theatre) and Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center, and Phoenix Center for the Arts (toss in a Dog Park as a bonus), we have a cultural axis around which Phoenix spins. Parks are a blessing, and this one blesses all who live nearby certainly, but all who live in Phoenix and beyond as well. It is a work in progress, as we can see, and has many more blessings still in store.”

We look forward to raising a glass to the esteemed Terry Goddard, who served as Phoenix Mayor from 1984-1990, and as Arizona’s Attorney General from 2003-2011. Swipe ➡️ to check out the photos before Hance Park was established, and now!

In regard to the preservation and development of Hance Park, Goddard says, “This remarkable patch of land was supposed to knit the Roosevelt neighborhood together after the I-10 split it asunder. Parks are a blessing, and this one blesses all who live nearby certainly, but all who live in Phoenix and beyond as well. It is a work in progress, as we can see, and has many more blessings still in store.”

A little more about Terry Goddard:
During 8 years as Arizona Attorney General (2003-2011), Terry Goddard focused on protecting consumers and fighting trans-national organized crime. In 2010, he received the Kelly-Wyman Award, the highest recognition given by his fellow state Attorneys General.

As Mayor of Phoenix from 1984 to 1990, Terry increased citizen participation in government culminating in the Phoenix Futures Forum and the Billion Dollar Bond Issue in 1988. He led nationally-recognized efforts in urban economic development, downtown redevelopment, long range city planning, the environment, and the arts. He was elected president of the National League of Cities in 1988 and recognized at Municipal Leader of the Year.

Terry was the Democratic nominee for Governor of Arizona in 1990 and 2010 and for Secretary of State in 2014, but today his political activity is focused on leading a nonpartisan petition drive to stop dark money in Arizona politics, getting rid of the attack ads paid for with anonymous political cash.

Terry practices law, works to revitalize and return to public use the Monroe Street Abbey, an historic church on Third Avenue in downtown Phoenix, and teaches at the ASU College of Law. He is President of the Central Arizona Project board, administering the system bringing water from the Colorado River to central Arizona. Terry retired as a commander after 27 years in the Naval Reserve. Born in Tucson, he graduated from Harvard College and ASU College of Law. Terry lives in the Roosevelt Historic District in downtown Phoenix with his wife Monica, a tortoise, many cats and (occasionally) their recent ASU graduate son.

We're thrilled to be offering craft beers from Greenwood Brewing, a woman-owned brewery in the heart of downtown Phoenix, at Noche en Blanco this year! The Rosemary IPA is different & truly special--dry-hopped with fresh rosemary sprigs and Cascade hops, this American style IPA is earthy, grassy, & crisp. Be sure to add this amazing brew to your order when you purchase tickets (at the link)! 🍻🌿

A little more background on Greenwood Brewing: They launched their brewery in Downtown Phoenix on July 18th, 2020. Founder Megan Greenwood is an engineer and home-brewer with a passion for great craft beer along with the meaningful conversations and stories that it creates. Their philosophy is that great beer provides an avenue for powerful conversation. We believe that women need to encourage each other in order to create change in their lives. Craft beer can be a vehicle for culture shift. Why? Because craft beer promotes social experiences and social experiences promote conversation. The right conversation can promote change--that’s the ultimate goal.🤍🍻

Phoenix Fire Station No. 4, part of Hance Park, opened back in 1951, though but it hasn’t operated as a fire station since the 1970s. This week, the City of Phoenix Community and Economic Development Department issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the lease, redevelopment, and operation of the City-owned Firehouse, for a restaurant concept. With the growing restaurant and bar scene in the Roosevelt Row Arts District, this means new life for this unique building.

For more information on the RFP, check out the link here: https://solicitations.phoenix.gov/Solicitations/Details/1276

🌳🚨🚒🌟🌟Exciting news!!🌟🌟🚒🚨🌳

The City of Phoenix Community and Economic Development Department has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the lease, redevelopment, and operation of the City-owned Firehouse, located at 1130 N. 1st Street in downtown Phoenix, for a restaurant concept. The Community and Economic Development Department is conducting this RFP on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department and the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board.

The firehouse, which was built in 1951, but is not historically designated, is about 4,500 square feet of indoor space and has an outdoor yard that could be used for a dining patio, with approximately 3,000 square feet. The City's request seeks developers with experience renovating old buildings and running a restaurant. The chosen developer will work with the city’s historic preservation department to best reuse the building.

The city's request for proposals asks developers to:
• preserve as much of the building's character as possible.
• expose the original brick.
• incorporate the building’s past life as a firehouse into the design, like using some existing features as art pieces.

The RFP has been posted here: https://solicitations.phoenix.gov/Solicitations/Details/1276

A Pre-Submittal Meeting is scheduled for 08/09/2022 at 3:00 p.m. and a due date of 9/20/2022 by 2:00 p.m. Please see the RFP for a full timeline.
