Huge Shout Out to my Client Sharon!!!!
I train with Brittany and a bunch of other wonderful YOUNG women on Saturday mornings. Since my experience with other lifters is limited, just having the other women around is a joy. As an older woman (75 years old) who cannot "compete" with these youngsters, it's wonderful to see what youth can do. When you train with Brittany, she watches every little move you make. The slightest correction in stance or where you grip the bar or how you hold your breath can result in pounds more for the lift. As a trainer, Brittany is generous with her time, kind to the max and very motivating.

You Can Do Hard Things

It’s Monday which means another start to the week. Another week of putting intentions out for yourself that bring you closer to being better than last week

In order to be better we have to challenge ourselves. We have to struggle. We have to do hard things
.
Hard things may involve setting boundaries, making sacrifices, and in some cases being selfish in our pursuit
.
So remember as you’re rolling through this week, stay the course and remind yourself
.

Man I loved these books growing up
.
You know, the ones where at the end of the chapter you got to choose “this way or that way”?
.
Almost every aspect of our lives can be compared to how we read these books
.
Choose your fate and trust no matter what everything will work out for you
.
That’s how we read these books
.
It’s not to intervene or control by looking too far ahead
.
It’s not to look back and keep starting again
.
When we choose our path and practice the art of reading (I.e. a combination of creating and allowing things to unfold) we become creators and life gives us exactly what we need at that time
.
And every single page builds a story, no one page more significant than the next, and every single one significant in the entire story
.
No matter where you are in your story remember everything you’ve read is important but it’s NOT predictive of what’s to come
.

BLACK AND WHITE THINKING
.
I’m going to make some waves with the following statement:
.
Black and white thinking doesn’t work no matter which side of the spectrum one is on
.
.
The people who work with me know I’m very much opposed to extreme measures the fitness and nutrition industry pushes, especially around this time of year
.
❌Extreme restrictive diets
❌Unsustainable training programs
❌”All or nothing” way of living
.
However
.
One can’t sway to the entire opposite end of the spectrum, even if that part of the spectrum is the “positive” side
.
❌Only eat whole, natural foods
❌Simply be more active
❌Dieting and training should be “easy”
.
.
Ultimately, THIS is the missing piece I see from so many people who are in a perpetual state of chasing their goals
.
Either going balls to the wall with their training or totally off the rails and not working out at all
.
Being super restrictive in their dieting or taking the YOLO approach
.
And the one most of don’t want to hear, believing one doesn’t have to sacrifice in order to attain freedom or accomplishment
.
.
I help a lot of the clients I work with in understanding their own mindset and approach to their fitness and health journey. We look at how it is (or isn’t serving them) and ultimately collaborate together on how to adjust out of a black and white way of thinking and into one of balance and sustainability
.

SLOWWWWWW Down

Tempo training is a great way to navigate a variety of barriers many of us may be facing right now with some gyms being closed and/or access to equipment being scarce
.
Tempo training is altering the speed to which one performs a certain exercise. This strategy can increase the difficulty or intensity when adding more weight may not be an option
.
For example I’m doing a 6 second eccentric RDL (otherwise noted as 6-1-0-1)
.
Actually implementing it appropriately can be challenging though
.
As things become progressively more difficult within the set it’s easy to start skimming and moving quicker through the movement
.
Like anything in life, slow and steady wins the race 🐢

When It’s Important You Find a Way
.
I gotta admit, seeing the sheer ingenuity and determination within the fitness and health arena this year has been pretty awesome
.
People constructing squat racks out of 2x4’s, using household objects as weights, there was no shortage of people operating under the notion of “if there’s a will, there’s a way”
.
In the same sense, I’ve seen (and admittedly committed) the shutdowns as a way to validate not training
.
Every situation is unique but at the end of the day I stand by the following:
.
When something is important we find a way
.
Where most get caught up is that “way” doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be “balls to the wall” and it certainly doesn’t have to be complicated
.
Simple and sustainable will always work and if this year has taught us anything it’s that we really need very little to be active and well
.
.

You’re Basically Picking a Life Partner
.
When you’re choosing a coach or personal trainer there a lot factors to consider. This person will most likely act as a coach, therapist, friend, teacher, and everything in between at some point in your journey
.
So what factors are important to consider when selecting a coach or trainer?
.
🧠Education/Experience: is this person knowledgeable about training, nutrition, and behavior change? Have they worked with people who have similar goals as you? Do they have some formal education whether it be in the form of degrees, certifications, and/or mentorships?
.
🗣Personality/Character: is this person and his/her coaching style aligned with your expectations and needs? Do you need someone who can give you a lot of of tough love and assertiveness or do you respond to someone who takes a softer approach? Are they someone you can realistically “jive” with and still respect and look to as a leader?
.
👀Track Record/Client Testimonials: Fellow coach @cthefudge always says “Success Leaves Clues” and I couldn’t agree more. Does this person have evidence of success (and success isn’t just a ton of before and after pictures)? Do current and previous clients speak positively of this person and their experience with this coach/trainer?
.
.
There is ALOT to consider when choosing a coach or trainer so be sure to do your due diligence by becoming crystal clear on the experience you want/need and then do your homework to find the best person for the job!

Cue the fitness industry vultures with their “Resets, Challenges, and Get Slim in 8 Hours” Bullsh*t

Most of these tactics are well meaning, but truth be told they’re gimmicks. They are to hook you into being motivated, inspired, and believing they offer the special solution to getting to your goals (I.e. sell you something)
.
Today I offer a different perspective perhaps you could try:
.
One change
.
One change in the four areas of health (physical, mental, social, emotional) you can adopt this week
.
Instead of doing what most are preaching, a complete f**ken overhaul of ones life, let’s try something different, perhaps more sustainable that can lead into some big changes over time
.
Maybe it’s walk for 10 minutes
Read 5 pages in a book
Spend 20 minutes talking with a friend
Take 3 minutes to meditate or journal
Make most of your meals instead of take out
.
.

You probably don’t want to hear this..

Most of us don’t change all that much over time. Sure, we can all say the age old “new year new me” but in reality we all know how it’s gonna look come March unless we ask ourselves two very important questions
.
What are my priorities?
Am I being honest with myself about said priorities?
.
Let’s take the example of wanting to lose some quarantine weight now that 2021 is here. Great, what are your priorities?
.
Do you work 60+hours a week and run a household? Adopting a 5x a week training schedule probably won’t be a priority for you so finding ways to incorporate more daily movement and focused training may be ideal. And that’s ok!
.
Let’s say you want to lose weight but you lie to yourself saying I can achieve said goal and still eat in the same manner to which you gained the weight. I’m not knocking you, it’s ok! The point is, be honest with yourself about your priorities and the goals in which YOU are setting forth for yourself
.
There has been a lot of discussion lately amongst fitness professionals like @vitaminphd @shannonbeador @biolayne regarding some of these topics
.
As coaches we tow the line often between showing empathy and compassion for those we serve while practicing honesty and accountability. Motivating and inspiring others to achieve their best without inflicting our own bias or judgement for everyone’s personal situation and priorities are different
.
Whether it’s a health or fitness goal or even a personal goal, asking yourself these questions AND practicing objectivity and honesty with yourself may be the missing element to your journey of transformation
.
