Some of my online clients say it has been a particularly long winter up North. Winter can be so rough physically and psychologically.

To my Wyoming/Montana/Colorado friends, I'm sending you some love!!!

And I'd like to offer you this thought:

Just keep moving, even if it's a crawl.

We tend to underrate small steps, let alone crawling! But without crawling and walking first, we never run.

For those of us prone to depression and/or anxiety, we are prone to ALL-OR-NOTHING THINKING and THE HABIT OF PAUSING. We tend to think "If I'm not doing all the things, what's the point of doing any of the things?"

In times like these, we have to recognize where we are and switch into a different mindset.

At this time, our mindset must be that ANY tiny positive choice is extremely valuable.

Do not underestimate the value of keeping your feet on the path!

Here are two tips:

1. When you find yourself discouraged, paralyzed or down in the dumps, make a game of interrupting that pattern by finding just one positive choice you can muster the energy to make right now -- one nourishing meal, one glass of water, once early to bed, one hot shower, one walk or workout. Repeat. This is how we crawl.

2. Ask: "Is there any way I could actively resource myself right now by telling someone I'm struggling?" A close friend, a family member, a therapist, a sponsor, a depression hotline, someone in your spiritual community, or anyone you can feel safe with. Depression thrives in isolation and shame, so speaking our struggle to even one person can be potent medicine.

Client Shout-Out!!! I gotta tell you how proud I am of @fit_jordan307

I had the honor of being Jordan’s coach through his 2019 Spartan Racing Season.

Jordan’s season culminated at the Spartan World Championships at Lake Tahoe recently. He raced gritty 13+ miles with 30+ obstacles at high altitude through challenging mountain terrain, including rivers and streams.

He overcame so many challenges to push to that next level.

Jordan trained longer, harder and raced better than he has thus far. And in Wyoming that meant spending hours out in the 💨 ❄️ 🌧 and mud. It also meant flirting with old injuries as we worked to push his running to that next level. It also meant finding even more time amidst a physically demanding job AND a college school schedule.

Despite all that, he did it! And he hit new bests all season! He found himself placing among the best of the best in his age group. In Breckenridge he won his first long race, he medaled in Utah and he qualified for Worlds sooner than he aimed for. And at Worlds he placed in the top 14% of the entire field, ahead of 592 other racers.

And above all, Jordan did it all from a place of truly loving the work, the sweat, the challenge. He stayed humble and hungry when he succeeded and he stayed positive when the going was really tough.

@fit_jordan307 you’ve got the heart and attitude of champion, and I can’t wait to watch you keep growing as an athlete and a person.

The Japanese Friendship Garden was a wonderful place to experience a glimpse of Japanese culture, aesthetic, thinking and above all — being.

Our guide (Andrea) was excellent. She shared so many details. Every little thing is steeped in symbolism that can remind us of universal life lessons and the practice of living them.

I will be reaching out to them to see if we can collaborate. I would love to bring some of the Japanese wisdom for wellbeing into some of my coaching offerings. ❤️

Is your low-carb diet impeding your ability to build muscle that burns more calories at rest, thus ultimately impeding your strength gains AND your fat loss?

Perhaps you’re never seeing improvements.

Perhaps you feel weak and shaky during workouts...maybe like you’re gonna pass out, especially in the morning.

Carb intake requirements are highly individualized but one thing is true for almost all of us...

(unless you’re in your prep weeks before a physique competition)

...we need to have some carbs within 2 hours of starting our workouts.

This can be either in the form of a complete meal 1-2 hours before, a carby snack 30-60 minutes before, or a liquid immediately before/during.

Personally, I can’t train hard after eating and I almost always train in the morning 10+ hours after my last meal. So I start fueling on some liquid carbs as I drive and while I lift.

This is my current fave carby beverage...

It’s like Mother Nature’s sports drink.

It’s not overly sugary...just enough to fuel a productive lifting session.

And it has even more potassium than a bunch of bananas!

The cheapest price I’ve found thus far is @zicococonut @amazon , especially with a subscription discount.

No matter how deep you have to dig for hope at times, my experience is that it’s worth digging for. No matter how far you feel from rising, remember the rising up requires the rooting down — taller trees require deeper roots. Our breakdowns can lead to our breakthroughs if we are willing to embrace the journey — our breakdowns lead us to the deep psych-spiritual terrain we won’t/can’t just go exploring for the fun of it. Every loss, “mistake”, “failure”, pain and shame I’ve experienced has ultimately led to more — more alignment, more understanding, more compassion, more connection, more strength, more success, more contentment and peace. I have found this concept of rooting down to rise up works in physical practices too — in yoga asanas, everyday postural alignment, squats, deadlifts, and shoulder presses. When I cue the mind’s focus to press into the ground, the resulting rising/lifting always looks and feels stronger. It works really well with clients learning to squat properly for the first time. 245lbs x 5 single reps on my last two sets today. Really happy with this considering this month’s traveling and stress has been hard on my body and nutrition. My neck and upper back was killing me this morning so I just took extra time warming up, foam rolling and took my time between sets and even during each set as you see the pausing. 215lbs for 5 reps on my last set this morning!!! That’s just 10lbs off my last known 1-rep max. Maybe it’s all this oxygen at sea level, but this was a super fun surprise! This entire past year has been a tough one for my squats and deadlifts. It was one set-back after another. Broken toe. Then strained upper back. Then pulled hamstring. Then strained glute. All year I’ve healed and rebuilt just to have something else happen. I had to just listen to my body. I had to take breaks from squats and deadlifts entirely at some points. At those points I could only do bodybuilding-style isolation and some bodyweight compound movements. Every time I restarted, my ego had to get over itself and accept light weights at higher reps. I’ve been rebuilding my foundation again for a couple months, and today was the first time my body gave me the green light to go heavier. So. Freaking. Tuesdays are for shoulders and recently, for handstand practice at the end! I’ve always been afraid of kicking up into this position but finally got over the mental block and am loving feeling the alignment in this pose. I’m taking the time to feel it like mountain pose, just inverted: all 4 corners of the hands rooting through the floor, toes reaching to the ceiling, tailbone lengthening toward the ceiling, low belly drawing in, etc. As my alignment is getting better, I’m catching moments where my feet are coming off the wall! #personalpractice #handstandpractice #yogaalignment #newchallenges

❤️ I’ve added these gems to my yoga classes. “The Flip-Chip is a discreet way for students to say when they want a hands-on assist and helps create a consent-based studio culture.” ❤️ These things may seem small, but as instructors, our mindfulness about these kinds of details is very important. Hands-on assists can provide a beautiful special-something to students who love them; it can help them feel poses better or enjoy the benefits of an essential oil application. It brings me great peace to confidently know I’m giving this to students who want them, while knowing I am respecting the students who don’t. Thoughts? Personal experiences (good or bad)?
