What a day this crew had at the Light at the end of the Tunnel Marathon this weekend! It was a rainy, cold day that you would think five Arizona runners would welcome, but it proved to be challenging with the wind, puddles, and mud.

As with most marathons, a couple of our runners had PR and BQ days while others dug deep to finish. β€’

Kevin Condon ran 3:25:48, a two minute PR!! Kevin's been chipping away at his BQ time and now only has 48 seconds to take-off!! β€’

Karen Prentice found out that running a marathon off a severe sinus infection in the cold rain wasn't a good idea, but she gritted it out and finished in 4:47:46. β€’

Bev Crupi trained and raced with intention and finished with a BQ time of 4:15:57!! It wasn't easy, but she fought hard and did it!! We are thrilled for you Bev!!

Cindy Rash will be receiving the I'VE GOT GRIT award!! Last year at the Phx Marathon, she had severe health issues that caused her to drop out of the race. Cindy was determined to get well and train to qualify for Boston! Cindy ran a PR half marathon during the marathon build-up and was in peak shape at the start of this race. Unfortunately, the marathon can challenge any of us no matter how fit we are. Cindy fell down the mountain twice and twisted her ankle. She got herself back up each time and kept fighting. She finished just 12 seconds shy of her BQ time!! We love the marathon, but it can break your heart!! I PROMISE you will be reading about Cindy's BQ marathon in the next year!!!

This is a wonderful article on Cristy Moreno (BTB-Texas!) Hopefully she will visit and run with us in Phoenix someday!!! So proud of you Cristy!!

Cristy grew up in LaPorte and still lives there today. She is a die-hard UH fan and will stay up late to watch them play, even when she has to leave her house at 4:15 the next morning to run. She only started running 7 years ago at the age of 49 when a group of friends from work suggested they train for a 5K. After the race she decided she wanted to run a marathon for her 50th birthday, and she did! She quickly became one of the fastest Masters runners in Houston and has run the Boston Marathon 3 times. Although she lives 40 minutes from Memorial Park, Cristy runs there almost every morning. She enjoys meeting her friends and feels like they inspire her to run faster than she would if she was running on her own. She has stopped trying to explain her love of running to her family. She says they think she is crazy to want to train so often and cannot comprehend why she would ever want to drive to the Park to work out. Last year Cristy endured a stress fracture in her sacrum. She was devastated to have to stop running, but instead of sitting home agonizing about her injury, she volunteered to continue making the drive into town on Saturday mornings and pass out water during the Houston Harriers long runs. Looking back, she says the injury gave her a new perspective on running. Although she was frustrated to not be training, she felt like her time supporting her teammates was just as important. In November she was given the green light to start running again. Her return has been filled with ups and downs as she has had to overcome a fear of getting injured again. However, she says she tries to constantly remind herself that she has a purpose in the running community that far exceeds how fast she races. Instead, she feels called to love and encourage her friends. When you’re jumping into a new running group or first time track workout, it’s natural to look to those who know what they’re doing in order to learn from them. That’s great, but it’s important to remember not to compare yourself to those who have been running for longer than you. β€’

When you are a new runner, you likely want to get good at it as quickly as possible. While you’re beginning, you’re comparing yourself to runners who’ve been at it for a lot longer. That can kill your motivation and create the, β€œWow, I suck at running,” feeling.

Wherever you are in running, whatever your goalβ€”-you’re going to be ahead of some and behind others. That’s okay! Own where you are. Someone else’s success should be nothing but your motivation. Take time to celebrate and embrace each step forward. β€’

Last week, I ran into one of my runners from years past. I hardly recognized her, as she had gained over 50 pounds. My heart hurt because I remember her crossing the finish line of her first half marathon, radiating joy and confidence. πŸ¦‹
πŸ¦‹
She said that it happened slowly. First she'd accepted being 5 pounds heavier, and then the same scenario replayed over and over again. Eventually, she had reached an unhealthy weight, with low self-esteem. I encouraged her to pick another half marathon and start training, one step at a time. There is no doubt she could be that fit, healthy, and self-assured half marathoner again. πŸ¦‹

Our conversation made me realize just how easy it is for any of us to gradually lower our expectations for our weight, work, eating, or goals. It never happens overnight, but is instead the accumulation of slowly accepting slightly less from yourself. Soon, you're far from you best self. πŸ¦‹

Perhaps I've done this a bit with my race and training paces, accepting a slower pace because I'm older. What if I'm not bringing everything I've got to the table? It's certainly something for all of us to consider. πŸ¦‹
