Start your Monday off smiling! I love Mondays because it’s a fresh start to a new week. I’ve had time to think about last week, where I went right, what I did wrong, what lessons I’ve learned, and how I can improve this week using Kaizen.

Every week I learn something new and I feel like I’ve shed a part of my old skin and stepping into a new version of self. Last week I got to meet and talk to some incredible people (a gentleman in Hawaii who owns a luxury residential and commercial business with a son who retired from the Chicago White Sox and a business owner of a marketing agency with two other businesses in the casual dining and nonprofit space helping the under serve community), make time for self care with The Root Cause Yoga with incredible women Asian Women in Business - Southern California, spend time with my girl Jenny Chang, onboard 5 new COO Alliance members, create an SOP, made time to see my long term care doctor Forward to set health goals for the year and plan a time to do all my cancer screenings, had a reunion with my friend from high school, submit to one media interview, facilitate 10 introductions, finish an interview for the Camera Ready event, model for an outdoor photoshoot for , I got to check out three new coffee shops, record my first ever voice over for an investor video, got voice coaching lessons by McCall Jones, and I was able to help at least 3 people last week. Last week was a very fulfilling week. I worked everyday last week, and it didn’t feel like work at all.

I spend 10% of my income on learning every year.

Learning has become synonymous with school - sitting in a classroom and listening to lectures.

But learning, in every role, is important and doesn't have to be like that.

I'm a BIG believer that you do not have to make mistakes to learn.

You can learn from others and avoid those same mistakes.

If you aren't asking the right questions during your interview process, don't be surprised when you've hired the wrong person.

As a leader, asking the proper questions when interviewing someone is crucial.

I'll tell you some of my favorite questions to ask, and I encourage you to leave your favorite questions in the comments.

➡️ What most resonates with you about our company’s mission?
➡️ Do you have an example of a disagreement with a former boss?
➡️ Tell me something about yourself that’s not on your resume
➡️ Can you teach me something I don’t already know?

Uncovering a candidate's motivations, goals, and aspirations is a proven way to discover leaders for your business.

Clarity can come in all shapes and sizes.

In my case, I was lucky to have it come to me in the middle of a meditation session 10,000 feet high in a cave in Bhutan last October.

It was a transformative activity, and one that taught me a lot about myself, and allowed me to gain clarity on the most effective approach to grow your company.

Creating a great work environment requires a leap of faith.

Certainly, you work hard as a COO, and your work is important, but does that mean that the environment you and anyone else work in has to be serious, too?

Absolutely not!

Consider your company culture and think about why you should foster a fun working atmosphere as a leader and COO.

FUN FACT: The temperature of the surface water of the Arctic Ocean is fairly constant at approximately −1.8 °C (28.8 °F), near the freezing point of seawater.

PS - I was probably in that Arctic water for only two seconds!

Don't take yourself so seriously.

This business thing is just what we're doing to make money.

So maybe we can have some fun along the way.

Maybe we can enjoy the journey a little bit more.

Maybe we can laugh and have a good time with our team, suppliers, and customers.

It just makes the whole journey a lot more fun for everybody when we can take a moment to enjoy life.

Reverse engineering is the best way to set goals and expectations with your team.

Title inflation has become a real issue over the last two decades.

20 years ago, the only way to get a C-level title was to be a major player in a large corporation.

This no longer seems to be the case.

Therefore, I suggest executing a bit of caution regarding handing out titles too early due to the following reasons:

👉 Firstly, it could lead to role expectation snobbery, where some may believe they are doing a job beneath their pay grade.

While they think they're supposed to be strategic or hire new people, they're really needed to roll up their sleeves and get dirty.

👉 Secondly, it doesn't give them anything to shoot for.

If you give them a C-level title immediately instead of a VP or director, they will have no goal to strive toward.

There's nothing for them to achieve.

👉 Furthermore, Gen Y has become very good at asking for titles, asking for equity, asking for bonuses, asking for perks, and asking for flexible hours.

As a result, some CEOs have gotten a little sloppy, giving everything away without requiring team members to earn positions, making it more of a meritocracy, or even being considerate about everything a CEO does.

In my opinion, titles should be something you've earned.

As a rule, they should be commensurate with your salary expectations and the position's requirements.

People need to stop giving advice.

This is because advice is often nothing more than an opinion, and opinions are like a**holes (you all know the rest of that sentiment 😉).

Our job is to share what we've experienced and let the person we're trying to help distill that experience in their own way.

This will make them far more open-minded and perhaps learn from your experience in a slightly different way.

Moreover, they can weave the experiences of numerous people together to come up with their own solutions.

We're constantly wondering...

🤔 Are people realizing I have no idea what I'm doing?

The reality is we're all feeling that to some extent.

The trick is to:

✅ Take a breath.
✅ Relax.
✅ Keep going.

When I got fired from 1-800-GOT-JUNK at the age of 42.

I had no idea what I'd do next.

For the four months after that, I journaled every morning for 20 minutes because I was a bit lost.

I made lists of things that:

✅ I loved
✅ I hated
✅ I sucked at
✅ I was good at
✅ Every project I'd led
✅ Lifelines
✅ Timelines

I journaled to remember everything I'd done in my career up until that point.

As I sat down and really contemplated it, one of the core lessons I learned was, why am I taking this so seriously?

Why am I so focused and so serious all the time?

What I realized is that NONE of this stuff actually matters.

This is just what we do to make money.

You should work hard and be focused, but spice up your day with a little fun, spice up your interactions, and remember that everyone who comes to work is just trying to make money.

If we can have some fun along the way, laugh a little bit, and remember to enjoy the journey, we're going to be way more productive.
