There will be more specific information coming out on Friday from Sensei regarding what is needed to move up to the next belt! Stay healthy and keep practicing.

[03/23/20]   Good afternoon karateka’s and Family members,

In-class attendance information

The dojo is currently open for anyone who wants to train freely and /or private/ semi-private instruction.

We are not a gym that has equipment that has continuous physical contact. We have made adjustments to our dojo where seating in the lobby, if used, is distanced appropriately. We are also ensuring that all students are spaced apart from each other even in these small class sizes. With a 3000 sq. ft training area we have plenty of space for social distancing. The entryway will have doors propped open during business hours to minimize the need to touch handles. And as always, the dojo is continuously being sanitized for everybody’s safety. We plan to follow all mandated State requirements in these unique times if and as they change.

If you or a family member are not feeling well, stay home

I also want to be open and honest that if you do not feel comfortable please do not feel obligated to attend or have your child attend in person. We want to help in any way we can to provide the services we offer and give our students a physical outlet however we can.

At-home training options

We are also going to send instructional videos to assist you in your training. Our black belts have been working hard to create quality instruction for all skills levels and plan to release these to you very soon. We will also be offering a training checklist that can be used at home to keep track of progress and that can help parents keep students accountable to their training.

The following is the adjusted and expanded schedule for training. These additional hours will be limited in attendance as well, as it allows more options for a training time with smaller class sizes.

[03/16/20]   Update for next week from Sensei

We are Open and Classes Resume Monday, March 16th

The health and well-being of our Karatekas and family members is our first priority. The faculty at Mountainside is fully aware of the on-going situation and we continue to maintain the dojo at high levels of sanitization. We take pride that our students and families have come to expect that the school will be impeccably clean and therefore are confident to attend and train. I would like to commend our 1st kyu high family on the incredible work they have done the past four months on the cleanliness of the dojo.

We are also taking precautionary measure with our staff that if anyone is not feeling well they will stay away to avoid any risk of infecting others. We are asking our students and family members to take the same precaution and avoid attending classes at the dojo if they feel they are at risk. The dojo is a special place for all of us, our heath and well-being are our highest priority.

We understand that the opportunity to view our classes in our lobby is a unique feature to our dojo that our families enjoy. However, due to the current circumstances, we will need to make adjustments to lobby access to minimize traffic and keep contact to a minimum. We would like to request for students 10 years old and over to be dropped off and picked up at the outside entrance. Lobby access will be permitted to parents/caregivers of students 9 and younger if needed. Any families with younger students that feel comfortable with drop-off/pick-up, can follow this guideline as well. We will have a staff member at the lobby entrance between classes to help direct students to their parents as needed. We will be closing the study center area until further notice. Access to the restroom will still be available.

The next few weeks the curriculum will focus solely on basics and kata, to avoid physical contact between students. Kumite (fighting) training will hopefully resume in the next several weeks, please leave all your kumite gear (pads) at home until further notice. We will take this as an opportunity to train on our basics and Kata to prepare for the Spring Pre-test. Tentatively our Spring pre-test is scheduled for the first week of April.

We will continue to monitor any updates by the CDC and other agencies if any information becomes available and will address additional risks as needed and as timely as possible.

Thank you for your time and consideration

The dojo will be open next week for business as usual. It is clean and sanitized. Classes resume tomorrow!

This past weekend our dojo supported one of our tremendous pre-schools that enhance the education of the many pre-schoolers in our community. We were able to have a booth and participate with a karate demonstration. Sensei Kiera Daley moderated and led six of our incredible students in a 30 minute demonstration.

Special kudos to Ava Hood, Abby Hood, Richie Rodriguez, Joah Barker-Glenn, Emma Needham, and Dominic Lanzo. They were tremendous and showed great karate spirit.

Thanks also goes to Krista Campisano, Dave Johnson, Tobi Murphy, Sydney Johnson, Peter Crane, Maria Abrams, Jason and Tiffany Hood for their volunteer efforts to make Saturday a success.

[01/31/20]   Dojo and Study Center Etiquette

The study center will be utilized for work and academic purposes only. It is not for social purposes and will be enforced to keep it that way. It will be known as a "Quiet Zone". Respect those who need this space to enhance their working and study endeavors. This is not a play room for children.
No shoes, food, drinks are permitted in the study center. Please leave shoes on the shelves provided outside of the study center. The guest bathroom also has a new make over.

Keeping the training floor clean.
It is important for students to have proper footwear when entering the dojo.
Students who are barefoot from the parking lot bring in dirt and grime that get inserted into the training mats. It is important that we follow this procedure. Students must enter the building wearing footwear and must store them on the provided shelves at the entrance to the study center prior to attending class. Please do not leave shoes on the floor in front of the rack as it creates a tripping hazard. Any sand or excess dirt on or in shoes must be removed before entering the building.

Sensei needs to offload this couch. Does anyone need a couch?
