The Yoga General

Yoga enhanced everything I do in life. From healing from auto-immune dis-ease, to being a better athlete, to a more caring and understanding human - yoga is the common denominator.

I'm here to share with you what has helped me so much. Join Alex Schimmel (RYT-500) for yoga/meditation/movement classes, workshops, and events in the South Jersey area. "I believe yoga will help us all, and the first step is getting started. The benefits will pour into every area of your life. I would love to work with you!"

Yoga means connection.

To be a good yogi has little to do with poses and everything to do with presence.

Yoga has little to do with Self-improvement and everything to do with Self-acceptance.

Yoga isn’t just 60 minutes on a rubber mat - it’s how you live from the time your eyes open in the morning to the time they close at night and every moment in between.

Yoga is how we relate to our breath, our bodies and our being AND also how we relate to our friends and enemies, family and strangers, humans and non humans.

For a big chunk of my 20s I considered myself a yoga teacher because I would guide you through flows and breath practices in a heated room.

Today I realize I teach yoga when I coach my students to rewrite and rewire their old habit patterns that often developed unconsciously. Today I share yoga when I guide people to de clutter every area of their lives and start to consume more consciously, from the foods they eat to the clothes they wear to the programs they watch and read. Today, I teach the truth that everything is impermanent and even suffering can be a gift when that’s remembered.

But the biggest change for me in the past year, is the realization that the best way to teach is not with my words, but the way I embody this practice on a daily basis.

I’m on a mission to be a fully expressed, fully embodied, full spectrum human being. And I’d love to pave the way for you.

Stay curious.

See the world through the eyes of wonder.

The happiest people have no expectations.

🌵 showed me if I was always seeking, I could only find what I was looking for. But if I fully opened myself up to receive, I’d find something more beautiful than I can imagine.

I like to live life like an experiment. And here’s one you can do to see how powerful you are:

For the next hour or day, express gratitude for as many things as possible. And see how it makes you feel.

And then for a different day or hour, practice complaining about as many things that aren’t how you want them to be; see how it makes you feel.

Life can be beautiful, bountiful and blissful - and you can create these feelings with almost any external circumstances.

Are you more or less curious now than you were 5 years ago? 🧱 🧠 🤯

One of my deepest fears is getting close with other men. Most of my life my relationship to even my closest brothers was one that was built on unconscious competition, ball-busting, and everything that lives on the surface. Opening your heart in these relationships could lead to shaming, getting ignored, or being called a p*ssy or gay.

For most of my adult life I was one of the culprits of this. I didn’t know and I’m still learning to be a strong, sacred, man. Most of us never really learn. Our friends, fathers and grandfathers were taught the same thing - the old paradigms like:

😢 🙅🏽‍♂️expressing emotion is not an acceptable way for a man to respond.
⚡️the more women we can conquer (f*ck) the more powerful we are
🦈 it’s a cruel world and when it comes to other men we need to eat or be eaten
🪢 Commitment will come back to hurt us
🦍 you need to be the alpha male and hurt other men to get there

There’s so many more codes that have been imprinted upon us that actually make us weak, unattractive, and leave a trail of pain behind us.

And in the last couple years I’ve been learning that there’s another way. Men can gather and hold space for each other to feel their hidden emotions, express what’s been suppressed, and to truly be seen.

I’ve learned that I’m not the only man who feels uncertainty. I’m not the only man who has suppressed fear and anger. I’ve learned that my power comes from my truth, especially around other brothers. I’ve discovered that the things I hide from other men are nothing to be ashamed of and lose all of their power over me when I say them out loud.

Men, we’ve hurt and silenced each other (and the feminine) for too long. I want to sit with you and share all of the things I’ve hidden in the past. I want to hold space for you to bring light to your pain, your shame, and your shadows. I want us to hold each other accountable to be centered, grounded and disciplined. Let’s change the patterns that we pass on to our children. Let’s give them the example of embodiment, presence, and a healthy container to thrive and grow. Let’s reclaim and step into our power, together.

GOING DEEP

It’s estimated the odds of being born a human are one in 400 trillion. Winning this lottery that allows the human experience is not to be wasted. I don’t want to scratch the surface anymore - in thought, in conversation, in relationships, in my work, in sex, in my breath - it’s depth that I’m looking for. In a moment where there are infinite possibilities, doing the same old same old is a disservice to me and my humanity.

I’ve tasted the depths of joy and love, I’ve been burnt by the fires of anger, I’ve felt the heaviness of sadness, and I’ve explored edges of my fear.

None of those things are comfortable, but they are rich. It’s in my discomfort that I see things more clearly. This life isn’t happening to me it’s happening THROUGH me.

Comfort is a beautiful thing when you need rest and recovery, but too much of it becomes poison. Yes, at times you need to come to the surface for air, but stay their too long and you fall asleep and miss the beauty of the human experience.

I welcome all of it with open arms. I’m at a place now where I want to hold hands with my shadows and my light. It’s an honor to hold space and presence for whatever this moment brings. I’m allowing different parts of me to come up and be seen. I’m not going to hide anymore. It’s ok if you don’t understand me, that’s not what I’m here for. It’s ok if you are triggered by the way I live. It’s ok if I help you see things from a different perspective.

This is an invitation to go and grow deeper. If you’re afraid of your darkness, shine a light of presence and acceptance there. If there’s monsters under the proverbial bed, crawl under there with them. If you are feeling good, express your light in whatever way is intuitive to you. These messages are not coming to me, but coming through me.

Going deeper into everything we will find wholeness/healing/holiness. We are in this together 🌍

We are ALWAYS on the path.

One thing that not enough people talk about is the ups and downs and imperfections of being on a spiritual path. As a human being, especially if you’re newer to a spiritual practice, it is super common to fall out of alignment! Hanging around people that gossip, going out to eat, skipping your meditation - it all happens.

AND ITS A BEAUTIFUL THING.

When we fall out of alignment we have the opportunity to get back in. We may even be more determined to stay in alignment next time because are reminded how it feels to be off.

Think about a time in your life that you skipped your yoga practice for a couple weeks - remember how good it felt to get back on your mat? Or the time you spent weeks working at a job you don’t like, remember how nice it was to get back to living for you?

Enjoy the ups and downs of life. It’s ok to fall off track a little bit. That doesn’t mean you aren’t on the path, it just means the path isn’t always linear.

I love you and invite you to start again.

Be present with whatever life brings you.

In the past week haha whoa - I’ve really felt the full range of humanness. So much duality in moments.

My queen and I got gifted a room at @kantulum for a week by a brother - we packed all of our stuff up (5 months of Tulum life) and @shamansofie and got there and they don’t allow pets! It all worked out in the end (always does) and Kan hotel is so epic.

We got to lead an art of human connection experience at @restaura_experience and learn from some amazing teachers @gurmukh108 and @johnscottyoga

We also had no place to sleep tonight until 4 pm today. Yesterday we searched all day and had 3 cool spots to choose from - but it took all morning to make the connection to actually move in. @breathewithbre and I definitely let our shadows come out to play but it all worked out (always does) and now we are in a literal dream home in the jungle.

I feel like a lot is expanding right now and I don’t fully know what to do with it. But I’m going to keep sharing the journey.

Daily download: be present with the breakdowns so you can be present with the breakthroughs

PS: I teach yoga 3x/week on Zoom and there’s an opportunity to get in unlimited classes for just $22 a month. Always #linkinbio

I used to live by the metaphor that life was like climbing the ladder.

Go to school. Get into college. Get a job with benefits. Grow with the company. Words like security, comfort, success, American dream were a big part of my plan. And I was doing it! Six months into my first job out of college (selling memberships at Equinox) I was in the top 10% of the company. I was celebrated, acknowledged, and had three $10k months. And I was sick and unhappy.

I decided to jump off the ladder.

I sought healing from autoimmune diseases and burnout. The next 3 months I spent most of my savings to go to healing centers and it culminated with a month long yoga teacher training in Mexico.

It changed my paradigm. Although everyone says the top of the ladder is where fulfillment, happiness and success exists - I saw for myself that wasn’t the case. It’s not about how high you eventually get but how deep you can be in the present moment.

When you try to climb down you’ll probably be met with resistance from family and friends still climbing up and telling you that’s the way to happiness. And it’s ok - but YOU know there is a more fulfilling way to live.

That’s what I’m here for. To remind you there is a different way. It’s ok to climb down or jump off that ladder. The real way to contentment, abundance and love is not getting higher, it’s becoming more present. It’s about embodiment. Its opening your hearty to the ups and downs. It’s remembering who the f**k you really are.
