Out of the Blocks - College Match

Comments

While it is true that many colleges are changing to a test optional policy, waiving a student's testing requirement doesn't mean the school won't favor a student with scores over a student without them. The only policy that avoids such comparison is a test blind policy.
The ACT has a big deadline today.

This is your last chance to register for any of the upcoming October ACT test dates.

As an added bonus, ACT is waiving all late fees for each of the 4 test dates this month so, if you'd like to take your ACT before Halloween, be sure to register at act.org by 11:59pm (Eastern) today.
The SAT also has a registration deadline this week.

If you're planning to take the November 7th SAT, be sure to register at sat.org no later than this coming Wednesday to avoid late fees.

Your ideal testing window opens as soon as you’ve completed Algebra 2 OR in January of your junior year, whichever comes first.
You should have an official test score that you’re proud of* by June of your junior year. Period.

*This means that you would send your score to a college and feel pretty cozy about it.

Wait - WHAT?! Be done with testing by June of your junior year?!

Yes. That is correct. Imagine you don’t even have the option to test in senior year because your life will be so much less stressful if you do.

Here’s why: it all comes down to time pressure and balance.

Time Crunch = High Stress

High Stress = Weaker Performance

If you wait to do the lion’s share of prep and testing your senior year, you risk getting mentally in your own way because you’ll have spent the whole summer curating the perfect college list and falling in love with your potential future home.

If your whole big dream future turns on your as-yet-proven testing performance, you’re going to psych yourself out.

Right now, the precise thing that can make it a little harder to be motivated to study is the exact thing that insulates you from the heightened emotions (fear, stress, anxiety, worry) that inhibit your testing performance.

Said another way…

If you’re a junior and you haven’t tested yet, now is the time to muster your motivation and give yourself the gift of space that will allow you to do your best work.

Wednesday, October 12th is a big day for juniors across the country. It's PSAT day!

If you're not aware, this exam is an important one for many students because there are scholarship awards that are given exclusively for a strong performance on this exam.

But here's the catch: the PSAT/NMSQT - the PSAT given in fall of junior year - is a one-and-done affair

College Application Deadlines for 2023 Are Fast Approaching –

It may be easy to forget that Early Decision/Early Action college applications are due in just a few weeks! Not only is applying early is one of the best ways for you to to demonstrate interest in your top-choice institutions, but it can increase your chances of getting accepted at some universities! For example, for the Class of 2021, Brown University's early admission rate was 21.9%, compared to its 8.3% overall admission rate; similarly, the University of Pennsylvania's early admission rate was 22%, compared to its overall admission rate of just 9%.

News has been swirling around test-optional policies and what that means for getting into your ideal school, but no one is talking about the biggest impact that this policy is having on families just like yours: potentially increasing the cost of college!

Yep, you read that right.

By not taking the ACT or the SAT, you might be losing out on *thousands of dollars* in merit aid and financial awards.

And before you go thinking your student wouldn’t qualify for merit aid scholarships anyway, think again! These awards aren’t just for super-high-scoring students. There are ways students can leverage even 50th percentile scores for cash for college.
