W
alking was first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 3:8. “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day.” What a peaceful way for God to build relationship with humanity. How meaningful to walk through our neighborhoods, parks, and communities while talking to and listening for our Creator, the One who knows us best! Our theme for our walk this year is “A Journey of Reconciliation.” The path we take will be a figurative journey from our home here at All Saints’ in Phoenix to the foot of the cross in Jerusalem. We will walk the pathway of peace, forgiveness, and hope. In a world that seems more unstable than ever, we seek to journey as a group of Christian pilgrims who desire to fulfill the biblical mandate for reconciliation and peace. The emphasis of our devotions and prayers will be on restoring relationships across boundaries of community, nation, faith and culture. Anyone can participate regardless of your age or physical fitness level. All types of exercise will count, even day-to-day walking around. The distance from All Saints’ Episcopal Church and Day School to Jerusalem, Israel is 7,448 miles, including the Atlantic Ocean! Our pilgrimage will be one of pain and hope to see how the church embodies the expectant promise of the good news of Jesus Christ in settings of poverty and violence. What if there was no “them” in the body of Christ? What if all were simply “we?” We invite you to join us, beginning on Ash Wednesday, as we answer the call to be reconcilers and healers.
