Following through with our last post, which was a share from the womenâs world cup, showing a player using a âflickâ (scoop, lift) to beat an opponent, it reminded us to share a few of the slides from our presentation at the 2024 United Soccer Coaches convention.
A few take aways from the slides:
1- Futsal is great to work on a great variety of different techniques,
2- Any technique âfrom futsalâ can be used in soccer,
3- The frequence that a technique will be used, can differ in soccer and futsal,
4- This frequence can change. For example, goalkeeper techniques normally used only in futsal (or some in handball) are now commonly used in soccer.
5- We canât really say a technique is a futsal or soccer technique. We can say that is known from its use in one sport or another, or that it may have started in one sport or another, but techniques donât really belong to one sport or another. However, certain environments may facilitate a technique to be mastered.

Thiago Motta is Juventus' new coach.
The article below does a great job talking about his strategies and style.
What it does not do, as well as all other press releases, is to tie how his past as a great futsal player influences his styles.
Thiago Motta played futsal for years, at top Brazilian futsal academies, before completely migrating to the soccer fields.
The article bellow talks about:
-using the goalkeeper in possession,
-allowing players to rotate to unbalance the opposition,
-playing with 1 or 2 "pivots",
-playing possession but also looking to pe*****te,
-defensive intensity.
Futsal is not only a way to develop players, but also coaches.
It allows the coach the see the game in much more detail, not only thinking "formations" and specific positions,
but also how players interact with each other, creating effective dynamics.
