π£ In loving memory of Donald Barde π£
This one means more to us than most.
For the third year running, I'm donating a custom-built rod to the Harry A. Bateman Memorial Jimmy Fund Fishing Derby β and every year, it's in honor of my dad, Barde . He loved this derby, and some of my favorite memories are of him out on the water here with my two boys: three generations sharing one love of fishing.
This year's build is a custom Workhorse β a 7'0" medium-heavy, fast-action rod with a split-grip cork handle, finished with one-of-a-kind, hand-marbled Jimmy Fundβthemed work in the split-grip section. It's sensitive enough to feel the lightest tap, with the backbone to handle whatever the Lake throws your way including some light saltwater use.
And it carries one more touch that makes it truly unique: it's been hand-signed by pro angler Latimer.
Huge thanks to Bateman, who runs this derby every year in memory of his own father, Harry. Every dollar raised goes to the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, supporting kids and families fighting cancer.
Come fish the derby, grab a raffle ticket, and take a shot at this rod knowing your support goes somewhere that truly matters.
For Dad. For the kids. For the love of fishing. π€

There's a moment during a rod build where everything slows down. The blank is prepped. The reel seat is spined and placed. And then it's just you, a spool of thread, and hours of precision work ahead.
Every guide on a BardeRodz rod is wrapped by hand. Thread by thread, wrap by wrap. The tension has to be consistent β too loose and the guide shifts under load, too tight and you risk compressing the blank fibers. Each wrap needs to be tight against the previous one, with no gaps, no overlaps, no crossovers.
A typical rod takes 2-4 hours of wrapping alone. That's before 2 coats of epoxy finish, before the overnight cures.
Could machines do this faster? Sure. But machines can't feel when the thread tension changes. They can't adjust on the fly when a decorative pattern needs a half-thread correction. They don't care about the craft.
This is the part of custom rod building that separates handcrafted from mass-produced. It's slow. It's meticulous. And it's one of a kind.

Let's talk drop shot / ned rig rods β because the wrong rod will cost you more fish than the wrong bait ever will.
Drop shot fishing demands three things from your rod:
**1. Medium power.** You're working light line (4-12 lb fluoro or braid-to-leader), and you need a rod that loads progressively to keep a fish pinned and provide enough backbone on hooksets. Too little and you can't control fish in current and around structure.
**2. Fast action.** The tip needs to be responsive enough to detect those subtle "tick" bites where a bass just breathes on your bait. But Fast action also means the rod loads smoothly through the mid-section for controlled hooksets and keeping the fish pinned thru the fight β you're not swinging for the fences on a drop shot.
**3. Spinning platform.** Drop shot is a light-line finesse game. Spinning reels give you the line management and ease of casting that baitcasters can't match at these light weights.
The Slick Stick was purpose-built for this: 7'0" Medium Fast spinning rod with grips for all day comfort and sensitivity. On the water, you feel every peck and bottom composition change β rock to sand to gravel β without overdriving the hookset.
That's what technique-specific design means. Not a "one rod fits all" compromise, but a tool built for the job.

More guides. Better casts. Here's the physics. π
Most factory spinning rods use 6β7 guides. We build with more β using Fuji's KR Concept guide placement β and there's a reason that matters to your cast.
When line blasts off your spinning reel, it doesn't shoot straight. It spirals off the spool in wide, chaotic coils that have to be tamed down to a tight, controlled line before they reach your tip. The faster and cleaner that happens, the further your bait flies.
That's exactly what KR Concept placement is engineered to do.
Here's why it works: π
π£ Rapid Choke kills line chaos early β KR uses a 3-guide reduction cone right off the reel to collapse those spiraling coils fast and close to the blank. Less chaos = more distance.
π£ More guides kill line slap β The #1 distance killer is line slapping against the blank. More guides keep the line controlled and off the rod. Guide rings are dramatically more slippery than blank material β every contact point adds speed, not steals it.
π£ Clean tunnel to the tip β After the choke, the line runs through a series of small, lightweight guides tight to the blank. No turbulence. No wasted energy. Pure transfer.
π£ More sensitivity β Every additional guide is another nerve ending. You'll feel bites you'd have missed on a factory rod.
π£ Less torque, more accuracy β Taller, sparser guides twist the rod sideways under load. KR's low-profile placement spreads that load evenly, keeping your cast straight and your blank performing the way it was designed to.
Factory rods are built to a price point. BardeRodz are built to a standard.
It's not tradition. It's engineering. π£

Every angler has that one rod they reach for when they're not sure what the day's going to throw at them. That's the GENESIS.
Thank you Brian Latimer!
Built on a 45MM Toray Fiber blank with a Medium-Heavy power and Fast action, this 7'0" casting rod was designed to handle the techniques you rotate through most β spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, jigs, swim jigs. It's not a "do everything" compromise. It's engineered to perform across versatile bass applications without giving up sensitivity or backbone.
The Fast action gives you a responsive tip that loads quickly on hooksets and the shock absorbtion to keep fish pinned, while the MH power keeps you in control when a fish digs deep. High quality stainless steel guides, one-piece construction, handcrafted right here in the Berkshires.
If you could only bring one casting rod to the lake, this is the argument-ender.
