A rucksack filled with American flags awaits step off by Soldiers assigned to the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) during Flags In at Arlington National Cemetery, May 21, 2026. During the annual Memorial Day tradition, Soldiers from The Old Guard place more than 260,000 flags throughout the cemetery to honor fallen service members, veterans, and their families. Each Soldier carries hundreds of flags while moving section by section across the cemetery before sunrise to ensure every gravesite and columbarium niche is marked.
